Why the u.k. and not France. italy, etc.?

The reason is the UK is to soft on immigrants in terms of social welfare etc. Other EU countries have very strict welfare laws etc. The UK also have huge long process for immigrants can stay in the UK, so while there what does the UK say "while your here is your welfare cheque, free housing. Most other European countries think the UK is too soft on immigrants. We follow the Danish system here in Ireland when it comes to immigrants. By this we say to them they have to do an Interview in Gaelic, plus stay in refugees center plus they all finger printed etc.
They get more benefits here than anywhere else. The French dont give them houses and money for doing nothing like we do
Free house, free money, freedom, dentistry, NHS, I'm sure there are other things
It can't be the weather that brings them here.

Star has it right. The UK has broken its back to become a multi-cultural society. No other nation on earth is as hospitable. Plus The UK has a multi class society with many niches for people to fit in. Also, remember that English is the lingua franca of the world so their is no language barrier for most people

The same reason why people come to New York City instead of Idaho. The reason is more opportunities in larger cities, pay scales are higher and most immigrants have family that already settled there.
Most of the above answers are true, but you also have to remember that many Asian and African nations were/are part of the Commonwealth, or former British Empire. Therefore they feel we have some sort of obligation to help them.
Because we are a bloody soft touch here and even tho they could ask for political asylum elsewhere in the countries they pass through (as you've rightly said) they know they will just get let in with no problem at all here. It's a ridiculous ancient bloody law thingy (forgotten what it's called) and the sooner it's changed the better. rant rave rant rave...

yeah i know i always wonder about that too...the only reason i can seem to think of is because of our beautiful weather...

In many cases it's because they speak English, so they come to an English speaking country i.e. UK.
Why shouldn't I bother telling you that many immigrants choose to settle in France, Italy, Germany? Is it a truth you'd like to ignore?

Its because after 5 years they get a Brit passport and citizenship, other European countries dont offer that. Once they get that they can vote for their buddies in office and turn Britain into a 3rd world country like the one they came from.
Probably because other Governments have at least half a brain - unlike Mr.Tony Bliars lot who haven't got a braincell between them. (Let alone a hearing aid to help them find out what the long suffering inhabitants of this third world country would like)

The UK needs immigrants, without them the economy would collapse. Why is everyone so stressed? The vast majority of immigrants come here to work, pay taxes and then leave to their mother country after a few years with the money they've saved. BRITAIN NEEDS IMMIGRANTS!
