Hi, We went through the exact thing in 05, we had to file the I-601, if you go to the forum below, you can find out everything you need to know on it. We would have never got through the process without it. I am American and had to show extreme hardship, it worked, we got approved the next month after they received it , he flew to the States the next month and we were married within the 90 day limit. If you are refused, another option would be for both you and your girlfriend to go to a neutral country where she wouldn't suffer extreme hardship.
