A legel resident with green card, how long can i stay out of U.S without my green card expire?
Answer:
After 1 year the CIS will consider your immigrant status to have been abandoned. Even after six months they might give you a hard time on reentry.
You are right. We need to change that here as well. Who is with me? Let's abolish green cards as well.
A year at most, unless you're serving in the military (in which caase you should apply for expedited citizenship).
Stay as long as you want. The U.S. government is swamped by passports so they sure aren't going to be looking for you. And if they do, just come back across our southern border. Then you will qualify for all kinds of goodies that Americans born here don't get.free medical, free housing, free food, etc.
Green cards, usually expire within 10 years. So check the expiration date.
You have to spend the majority of your time in the US. If you do plan on spending longer then a year abroad, You may want to research getting a travel document. Also, it doesn't count if you live away 362 days, come back for a few days and leave again. You will lose your green card if you do. If at all possible, start the steps towards citizenship. If you spend time away, you put off how long you have to wait to apply. The normal wait before you can start the steps towards citizenship is five years, but if you're gone for a year, then you have to wait 6 years.
You are a legal resident of the United States, you shouldn't stay anywhere else but the United States. If you stay outside for more than 6 months, that means that you are abandoning your permanent resident status because you are no longer a PERMANENT RESIDENT.
