There are some exception, which must be arranged for in advance. Usually they must be arranged for at the time of applying for permanent residency, but in some situations, you might be able to get a waiver. Contact U.S. Immigration office and explain situation and see if they can help.

You will need a reentry permit from CIS.
I say not good idea...To travel before you get the Legal Residence=Green card...You can leave yes...Come back NOT...Thtas why you need the green card to come back in...By the way I heard that you can a special permit...It cost a good amount of money yes and it won't warranty you that you wil be able to come back in in the US some people have done it and they wish they never done it unless is a official leave etc..Like a Gov issue etc...I say don't travel if you can wait a little then wait...
