You can't. At least that's what I was told when I was on a J1 visa.
I was on a J1 visa in 2003 and when it ran out i was gutted, three years later I'm still trying to get back there!
You could switch to another visa type - like the H1B but you will have to find a company who will sponsor you for an H1B visa, and for that you have to have a 4 year degree and work in one of a select few occupations. It depends what country you're from as well.
As the previous answer says, you would need to find an employer to petition for you either as an immigrant or a non-immigrant. Here is more information:
