Why would any one do this? Do we need MORE drugs in America or what?

WASHINGTON -- A Bush administration plan to proceed with a pilot program to give Mexican truckers full access of U.S. roads has caused a bipartisan uproar on Capitol Hill.
"The cross-border trucking program is bad for America," said Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and presidential candidate. "It appears, under the current program, that commercial interests are being pushed ahead of the safety and security interests of the American people."
The Teamsters union and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, a trade association representing the independent truck owner-operators and professional drivers, also oppose the program, saying Mexican trucking companies have poor safety figures, do not keep reliable records on accidents, and do not dependably test drivers for drugs and alcohol.
Answer:
My next door neighbor is a trucker. He is outraged by this plan. He wonders if the highway depts in every state will have to replace the staff at checkpoints and highway patrol officers who can't read Spanish with ones who do, so the Mexicans logbooks can be checked. He talked for a couple of hours about this just a week or so ago, and voiced his concerns about the substandard requirements for vehicles in Mexico, and the problems this plan will bring, not just to truckers here in the US, but also to everyone else on the highways. He wonders how long it will take for contracts currently held by American truckers to be given to Mexicans who will charge lower rates.
So...now we'll see illegals shipped into the US inside of TV boxes in the back of an eighteen wheeler?
It is a bad idea, but don't get the notion that all Mexicans drive drugs up to the U.S.
This only benefits the richer higher ups who are completely safe from this and can reap the benefits.
Why not they already make our border patrol uniforms why not give them our roads they have our jobs.
Canadian truckers can come here , so why not Mexicans, if they comply with all the rules & regs?
For once, I have to agree with the Teamsters
This has been going on for a while, and every truck gets hit with dope dogs and illegals-sniffing dogs.
Unfortunately, the Mexican government will not do anything to ensure the quality of their truck drivers or the safety of their vehicles. They only care about increased revenues for themselves. So what if some Americans get killed because of their shoddiness? Not their problem. Remember, Mexico is the world's second most corrupt country. Don't expect anything good to come over the border.
Unbelievable isn't it? As the article mentioned, Mexico doesn't have the same safety regulations as America. It's going to be pure hell on the highways. What happened to national security?
Does not seem to make America safer. How long before terrorists take advantage of this loophole.
now it seems we are not worried about drug trafficking, which makes sense since they are stopped and are checked many many times while on the road up, and of course at the boarder.
i think what the concern is that of the actual driver. it seems they don't regulate the companies and have bad safety records. they also don't test the drivers for drugs and alcohol as done by most companies here in the states.
Yeah and don't believe the cra* about cheaper drugs either, the stuff is getting more expensive..hmmm, just like all the other stuff the illegals are involved in. I guess da man is still makin out though!
"The Transportation Department, however, says that Mexican trucking companies are only required to meet safety criteria included in the Iraq war supplemental-spending bill signed into law by Mr. Bush on May 25, and is proceeding with its plan to allow Mexican trucks into the country.
"We're dealing with the bill that was already signed into law," said Melissa Mazzella DeLaney, a spokeswoman with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which is part of the Transportation Department. "We're certainly very committed to this program. It's one of the top priorities in the department right now."
How disingenuous. It was only in the law because they had someone tuck it in like his 'sense of Congress to accelerate the spp' was 'tucked into' the immigration bill. The House had a bill against this program that passed overwhelmingly on its own merits.
So what do we do about this man?

"Its June 8 Federal Register notice provides no new details about safety audits or specific public health and safety measures. It barely addresses English proficiency compliance for drivers, specific standards to evaluate the pilot program and a list of or the basis for Mexican regulations that will be accepted by U.S. authorities as equivalent to U.S. regulations, even though they are not. Instead, the agency mostly provides assertions with little detail and few facts to support them.
Finally, the agency has failed to establish criteria that are subject to monitoring during the pilot program, such as mechanisms to determine whether there will be an adverse effect on safety, monitoring and enforcement to ensure compliance by participants and the use of a representative sample of Mexican-domiciled motor carriers.
Congress has very specifically required FMCSA to provide all of these answers. But the agency and the Bush administration are deliberately, knowingly and willingly violating the law. This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. It is clear that FMCSA intends to justify the outcome of the pilot program regardless of any contrary evidence and ram through a major change in public safety policy regardless of the consequences.
The public deserves to know the details about a project that could kill or injure families driving on our highways throughout the country. Already more than 5,000 people are killed and an additional 112,000 are injured in truck crashes each year. The public deserves an honest, forthright government that obeys the law itself and enforces the law. FMCSA should not implement any cross-border trucking demonstration program until it can make the grade."
June 8 Fed Register, huh? Then it may well still be in the comment period and entirely deserving of comments.
I smell big businesses paying off our politicians. Our elected officials are a bunch of hypocrites! They say they want to protect us, but then they want to let Mexican truckers drive freely around the U.S.? What the heck are they thinking?
Get ready for a huge increase in accidents and deaths on our freeways and people who may or may not be qualified driving what amounts to a massive weapon on our freeways with our family and friends.. Do you sometimes get the feeling that our legislators are for sale...
I am surprised the Teamsters are not raging against this, or maybe they are and I have not heard about it yet..
