Farms Fund Robots to Replace Migrant Fruit Pickers
As if the debate over immigration and guest worker programs wasn't complicated enough, now a couple of robots are rolling into the middle of it.
Vision Robotics, a San Diego company, is working on a pair of robots that would trundle through orchards plucking oranges, apples or other fruit from the trees. In a few years, troops of these machines could perform the tedious and labor-intensive task of fruit picking that currently employs thousands of migrant workers each season.
The robotic work has been funded entirely by agricultural associations, and pushed forward by the uncertainty surrounding the migrant labor force. Farmers are "very, very nervous about the availability and cost of labor in the near future," says Vision Robotics CEO Derek Morikawa.
Answer:
Most Americans won't do those jobs because they don't pay a very fair wage for breaking your back all day. Why do that when you can make the same wage for a far less demanding job? If we automate production we minimize shortages due to holidays, worker fatigue, illness, and a host of other factors. And the icing on the cake: if there is no work for them maybe they'll go home!
rofl!
You have to figure that it will be at least 20 years before robotics will be widespread enough to impact these non-skilled service jobs.
I was watching Andy Stern from the SEIU on TV the other night saying that service workers were the next middle class and should be paid accordingly. Mr. Stern forgets that most of the employees that contribute to his union will be out of jobs in 20 years.
When the illegals become legal who is going to the jobs that they don't want to do when they quit and go to work at Walmart?
either they will end up going back to where they came from or be on our welfare rolls.nice picture eh?
See Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin. This issue has been around for a LONG time and the jobs never seem to disappear due to technology.
They'll become political pundits for CNN and Fox News.
They will try and find jobs in other sectors of business. And.. why'll they are searching for those 'undiscovered' jobs, the tax payer, you and I will continue to support them... possibly indefinately!
Your other avatar was better.
They use the argument when it suits them. They use it as an argument as to why we "need" illegal aliens.
They know this question defeats the whole point of their argument, so they won't respond to this. They see the post, but will ignore it. But when it does suit them, you will see about 20 of them respond in a heartbeat.
Yup...I mentioned this before and it was totally disregarded by the pro-amnesty crowed.
People need to wake up before it is too late. We do not need nor WANT illegal aliens here.
there's a good reason that human labor is used to harvest fruit. anyone used to good quality produce is appalled by the supermarket version available in this country. robots would only make things worse. this is the very reason that the migrant worker situation has gotten so bad in this country, farms demand human labor.
What was illegal immigrants would come on the internet and complain about the robot. That they refuse to speak spanish and insist to only speak in Binary. They would complain to the government and want something to protect their jobs. THe robots would come on the internet with multiple names and call them all racist and do march on the street protesting for robot rights.
Picking fruit is only a small percentage of jobs held by illegal aliens. It is estimated that 20% of the construction jobs in the US are held by illegal aliens. They also have a lot of forestry and wildland firefighting jobs. Illegals also work in canning and food packing. Service industry jobs include housekeeping, cooks, dishwashers, laundry workers.
It's more like, who will be the next invaders of the USA when the dirty leeches from mexico demand their "rights as citizens" to minimum wage?
