How is the US a democracy if the people really have no say?

Such as the US/Mexico border, why do we as citizens have no say with this issue?

Answer:
People do have a say in it, they just don't care to voice their opinion.

What percentage of people vote in our elections? 25-30%?

Enough said.
I agree with you???? We all need to strike
We do. Write to your Representatives and Senators. Show up on election day and vote for the people who stand firm against illegal immigration. Write editorials to your local papers. Start petitions.

No one's stopping you from being active in making things better.
We do have a say, it just doesn't come easily. We have to get off our butts and vote. If you get enough popular opinion, it will happen.
The people do have a say -- we elect Congress and we elect the President.

Remember that the US is not a pure (polyarchal) democracy. We're a democratic republic. Which means our "say" is limited to selecting the elected officials who make the actual decisions.
What do you mean, they have no say? They get to elect the government! Of course, they only elect the kind of government which the government has told them to elect. Because governments have money to campaign with, and they have lots of rich friends in the media. You can vote for whoever you want to, but the government makes you want to vote for them.

And in case you didn't get my point...

Today, we celebrate the first, glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directives! We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology, where each worker may bloom, secure from the pests purveying contradictory thought!

Translation: What I said in the first paragraph, only not quite so extreme. Representative democracy fails because it allows a vicious cycle of bad governments and ignorant people.
e-mail your senetors, and tell them how you
feel, i did. [and got an answer]
this is why voting is so very important. People know the
local people who run for office. They hold meetings
locally and on tv so the people can see where they stand
on the issues concerning we, the people. We vote for those
we think represent our beliefs, and if elected, they then have
imput higher up when these issues come up and they get to
vote on laws. It's a trickle up effect. You have say then thro
your proxie (the person you vote for).
-----We have a huge say in everything the government does. ---Jim
Your "say" is at the voting booths, the next time you want to do something about the border issues look up your congressman's stand on illegal entry into the US... Then have your "say"
Because you keep electing the wrong people to represent you!!!
We do. Write to your Representatives and Senators. I don't know where he has been but these Representatives and Senators have all but tuned out what America wants. It doesn't matter how we say it or how many times we ask it our Representatives and Senators are doing what is in their best interest not ours. They've had years to fix this no matter how outrage the public is congress keeps on with this guest worker program which means we will have the same problem in 20 years, none of them intend to leave once they arrive here and get a look at all the free stuff they can get. It's no wonder groups like La Raza are so interested in seeing to it illegals have more rights and benefits than we do.
The U.S. is not a democracy, it's a republic. We have an electoral college that elects the president not direct vote.

In reality, we have become corporatist. Big corporations can, with money and the right marketing strategy, put in leaders that do their bidding. Both parties are guilty of swaying to big business and big money. At your expense.
People did have a say, untill some of them (and the supreme court) said "yes" to Bush. Thats when they lost the ability to say anything.
i agree. we need to make them hear us. it's got to the point if we're not illegal they don't want to hear us.
These United States are not a Democracy but a Republic.
The people do have a say, but most of them are too damn lazy to express themselves. In non-Presidential election years less than 50% of Americans vote. How many Americans do you think actually take the time to write, fax, phone, or even email their congresspersons or the President? Probably less than 1%.

This country is moving towards a two-tiered society where the vast majority are the poor and uneducated who are ruled by a rich, political elite. George Bush, Ted Kennedy and John McCain are the leading politicians behind this movement. If you don't want to see our country reduced to this, then contact your representatives, the president, and the media to stop this amnesty program. We the people have been effective in holding back the Senate Illegal Alien Amnesty bill with our pressure on our reps., but we cannot let up. Contact details are below. Thank you.
