Answer:
When you entered with the immigrant visa issued to you by the consulate, it should have been endorsed by a CBP inspector. This serves right now to evidence your permanent resident "green card" status and is good for one year. CBP would have then forwarded an I-181 which triggers issuance of the card.

The laminated card often takes several weeks to issue, so you are not outside of normal processing times. This holds true for the social security number as well.

If you don't receive the permanent residency card by mid-June you can call 1-800-375-5283 to see if the card has issued.

EDIT: you should NOT apply again for the SSN. This was taken care of on your DS 230 at the consulate and this can result in two socials (which raises questions if/when you later apply for naturalization)
Call immigration... How long did it take from day one and what type of green card application did you do?
Too bad you didn't just come over the border illegally from Mexico, you wouldn't have anything to worry about.
call your congressman. they have immigration caseworkers that can help you with this process.
POSER----green cards don't get you SSN only a tax ID so why do you try to inflame people with your blatant lies and misrepresentations. You would have had your green card before entering if you were approved.Try to make yourself believable when asking a question. Thanks

For your ssn, you should apply on your own. I believe there is an ssn office in Chicago. Check online http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ to make sure you have appropriate documentation to make sure you are eligible for the ssn (there are often long lines and I would hate for you to stand in line for 3 hours, only to find you did not have the right documentation to apply). It can often be a frustrating process, as another member said, you should have a visa in your passport given to you upon entering. It should state whether you are able to work or not. The physical green card may take some time.
