Hey, what famous event happened today in 1848?

It is the anniversary of the signing of the "Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo". This war officially ended the Mexican War and legally turned over most of the Southwest to the United States. Now, here are a few other tid-bits of info. All the 'whites' or non-spanish decendents that were living south of the new border with Mexico, were told that they had to go back north. Now, the Mexicans that the border crossed over, were given a choice, and that choice was to either stay and keep their land and become citizens, or go back bown south. There wa even a lot of Mexicans that went to the USA rather than live under the harsh dictatorships in Mexico.

You should read Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" It is about Americans in Mexico after the Mexican-American War. They are indian scalpers working as mercenaries for the Mexican generals. It doesn't have a happy ending.

Over a 150 years ago and the same crap is still going on.If you know, who from Mexico actually did the fighting.Was it spanish blood or did they send the Mexican Indians to do the fighting. In the battle of the Alamo almost all the Mexican soldiers were Mexican Indians.

What's your point? It doesnt take away from the fact that the US instigated this war to steal land from Mexico. What was the whole purpose of it other than to fulfill Manifest Destiny.
