Get the application for immigration from the Australian Embassy. There is a point system for all immigration.
If you are coming from a British colony, protectorate or are British,you are farther ahead than anyone else.
For work, they have a 'choice work list' if your skill is on it you have a better chance also.
Money, yes is a factor, as is your health.
Keep in mind though
that even if you qualify for all the requirements, and you get there and land on their soil, they can still reject you and send you back.
If you can get hired by a company looking for workers to go there, things are easier.
I would consider Adelaide, smaller, cleaner, quaint.

Where is SA? South Africa? South America? I am an American living in Australia. It is NOT easy. You will need to have enough money saved to be able to LIVE here for 2 years (long enough for your residency to go through). That proves to the Aussie government that you wont end up sponging off of their system.
You can get a working visa and work here for a while, to get your 'foot in the door'.
As far as living in the country, how country do you want to be? When they say 'outback' they mean it. You have to pump sunshine out there.
