Why do some people think illegal immigration is a Democrat vs. Republican issue?

Don't assume that legal hispanics are going to vote democratic just because of the illegal immigration issue. Most legal hispanics are against illegal immigration.Oh and people bring up that democrats will get the hispanic vote but you must understand how many white voters they have lost due to their illegal immigration stance.

Answer:
The Keyword is illegal.....Democrats don't seem to comprehend that word.....as long as they can get more people to GIVE FREE GOVERNMENT MONEY to, that means votes for them...Nuf Said
I never understood that either...of course I'm Independant. For the main reason that just because a person is one or the other doesn't mean they stand for all the same issues. I always thought that's why they have those parties, but over time youd see how a person would waive on a point.
I agree that it isn't really a Democrat vs. Republican issue. But every issue in the US is made into a partisan issue by partisan politicians. Every politician likes to bring up problems he can blame on the other party, and if he can't find one he will invent one.

In this case it's the Republicans who are having trouble. Republican voters want a stop to illegal immigration, but Republican leaders and big contributors want cheap labor. Ther are things that Democrats want too, of course, but the current big crisis that everyone's talking about is because of the disconnect between Republican voters and Republican policy-makers.
That's your opinion..And you are entitled to it.Traditionally I have voted Republican, but I am now registered as an independent..

Hispanic voters, many of whom responded favorably to President Bush's campaign appeals emphasizing patriotism, family and religious values in Spanish-language media in 2004, are turning away from the administration on immigration and a host of other issues, according to a new survey.

At the same time, separate polls show that conservative white Republicans are the voting group most hostile to the administration's support for policies that would move toward the legalization of many undocumented immigrants

A survey of 800 registered Hispanic voters conducted May 11-15 by the nonpartisan Latino Coalition showed that Democrats were viewed as better able to handle immigration issues than Republicans, by nearly 3 to 1: 50 percent to 17 percent. Pitting the Democrats against Bush on immigration issues produced a 2 to 1 Democratic advantage, 45 percent to 22 percent.

The poll findings indicate that Republicans are likely to have a hard time replicating Bush's 2004 performance among Latino voters. According to 2004 exit polls, Bush received the backing of 40 percent of Hispanic voters, up from 34 percent in 2000. Other studies have put the 2004 figure somewhat lower, although there is general agreement that Bush made statistically significant gains from 2000 to 2004.

Even if the GOP does maintain Bush's margins among Latinos in 2008, another study found that Democrats are likely to achieve a net gain in future elections, simply because Hispanics are growing as a share of the electorate.
Because they watch too much sensationalized cable news where creating sides = higher ratings. There are good points on both sides of this issue. If asked anybody, regardless of party, they would agree we should do something about illegal immigration.
Personally, I know alot of democrats who are against illegals
Both parties have dropped the ball on this issue. I'm 45, and in my lifetime, I can't remember an issue that has been as poorly handled than this one. The VAST majority of Americans want something done, but nobody wants to step up and do what really needs to be done. It's just one more step towards a nationwide revolt. I've never thought that about any other issue.
The truth of the matter is that there is no more of an immigration problem than there has been for the last 50 years.

The republicans needed a smoke-screen in order to cover up the real corruption that our current White House reeks of.

They lied in order to take this country to war, and this war has been nothing but an embarassment to the entire nation.

In order to get people's minds off of this quagmire of a war, they decided to start off with the hoax of an "Immigration Bill" headed up by john mc cain.

I never fell for the republican hoax.

Did you?
