Most Americans don't know how many years that it can take and the large amounts of money our Govt. wants from these people who are mostly so poor that they are living in shacks. ( Check it out once).
They aren't coming here to take your welfare - They can't get any assistance unless they have a S.S.# (I've worked in that field). And most Mexicans that I know ( and believe me it's alot I live in Houston, TX) are very hard working. That's why the hard labor companies hire them. Most Americans don't want to work outside in the 115+ degree humidity and do the hard labor, that the illegal mexicans will gladly do. Most Americans will say that they didn't get the job, but prob didn't even apply cause it's too hard.
They would rather go pick up that welfare check and the foodstamps, than work in the humidity here in Texas.
So don't say that Mexicans are stealing jobs away from Americans.
And this is from an all American white girl who's worked as a case worker in the Welfare Dept. for 10 years.
Yes we should tighten our borders, but untighten the restrictions to get in here legally for Mexicans. And then make it a little more restrictive for people of terrorist countries ( or countries that are a terrorist threat). i.e. Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia etc.

The inscription talks of those who come here and want to become Americans.
It does not speak of those who are Mexican, love Mexico and will always want to be Mexican but come to the US to earn a buck to send home.
It talks about those who want to integrate into the fabric of the USA, it does not talk about those who sneak in and take jobs illegally.
This seems amazingly clear to me, i guess it does to you too.

It's a statue, i thought you were referring to the symbology of it being on Ellis island and being the original immigration point.
How is it denying your heritage to integrate with a society that you want to immigrate to?
The opportunities and standard of living in the US were hard earned, we are under no obligation to share it with anyone yet we constantly as a matter of national policy try to improve other countries.
hmm just a thought but maybe if a few of the "hard working" Mexicans stayed in Mexico they could improve it to the point where one day people from the US will want to go there illegally?

I know what you're saying. Everyday there are so many immigrants passing through Ellis Island on their way to become Americans. They have set aside all former loyalties and languages to become true Americans. They strive only to assimilate and stake their claim on the American dream. Legal Immigrants are those that meet the requirements that your country imposes on them - basically they have to be well-educated, wealthy, english speaking people!
Tell me how many second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. generation Americans could meet those requirements! I doubt their immigrant grandparents could meet them either meaning that these Americans and their immigrant grandparents would probably be "illegals" if it weren't for their fortune to be Americans and to have had their families migrate to the USA many decades ago!

Yearning to breathe free is a very important statement. They have a free democratic system. And they elected corrupt politicians who do not try to enhance the job market over there. These people are not unfree so they are looking for freedom and refuge and becoming American.
The reason I say becoming American and learning the American culture and language is the first line. It says
Give me..... Not lend me and I will let them go later. It does not say "Let me borrow your tired or poor". I want people from Cuba to come to America. I want people who are under communist rule or under a dictatorship to come here. They would be and we would better served with those people than the Mexicans who can change their own government by true elections. Remember every Mexican filling a job is stopping someone in a country that puts you in prison camps if you speak out against the government. Who really needs our help?

When they had to forbid Americans from going up inside the Statue due to concerns for terrorism after 9/11, the statue took on a different meaning. It is a sweet symbol of a different time, but I assure you, they had screening criteria then too. You had to have a return ticket to come, be free of disease and show a means of supporting yourself. At that time we didn't have 300,000,000 people in our country, and had no subsidized services to abuse, so those issues were not factors. Now they are.

Instead of harping on the inscription on the Statue of Liberty, why don't you look at the MOTTO of the United States:
E Pluribus Unum -- Out of many, one.
In other words, though we have all come from somewhere else, we are a "melting pot" nation -- ONE nation -- that is a conglomerate of all those histories and cultures.
The motto is not "Out of many, one, plus the Hispanics since they don't want to integrate."
