Identity theft?

"During one stretch last year, American Staffing Resources -- which supplied temporary workers to the Fresh Del Monte plant -- employed 596 workers there, of whom 463, about 78 percent, were using someone else's Social Security number, according to a federal search warrant affidavit. Only 48 employees had valid, matching Social Security numbers.

This year, the Social Security numbers used by 184 American Staffing workers at the plant did not belong to them. Seven belonged to elderly people, about 20 to children, and 29 to people who had died, according to the affidavit. "

One of the things that really riled me about the Senate Bill is that people who had committed identity theft would still have been eligable for legalization, and if you read this story, because the illegal immigrant who used someone else's identity had a 'clean record' she just got community service, not even deportation.

I've known people who have had their identities stolen; it is very bad. Thoughts?

Answer:
i agree strongly with rabid frog. a client of mine was a nice young working stiff who made enough money to buy a nice condo in a nice neighborhood. so we entered into a contract and looked forward to him closing and moving in. down the road, i called the lender. he said that the mortgage would not be made because:

1. my client, whom i will call gerald john zebraphone (unique enough, huh?) had a social security number issued to him in chicago.

2. it turned out that one gerald john zebraphone of the state of oregon had the EXACT SAME SSN and had awful credit--in fact, his wages were under garnishment! on top of that, he was in arrears on child support payments!

now put yourself into the same position, only now you are trying to secure a job. your potential employer runs a check on your SSN and learns that someone who lives in the state of TX (you live in IL and got your SSN in IL), with YOUR NAME, already works in TX as a landscaper and has been in prison in the past for embezzlement!

are you going to get the job? no way! in fact, now all the social security taxes you paid in your life and what the illegal alien that's using your name and SSN paid is going to end up being a big, huge can of worms!

you will have to hire a tax attorney because if you try to work it out on your own with SS, believe me because i watched this happen to my own client (who was able to purchase his place, but i was in contact with him over the following 8 years), the social security administration has NO MEANS and NO WAY to straighten this issue out AT ALL.

therefore, the employer that hired your counterpart in TX should, by law, have to pay all expenses incurred, including your loss of income, as a result of him hiring a person that stole your identity. it only makes sense, doesn't it?

why not deport he who stole your id and meanwhile, put the owner of the company that hired him into jail?

when, i ask, will laws be made on behalf of we, the people that are for we the people, the legal citizens of the united states of america by congress?
My thoughts turn to why these people weren't deported, identity theft or not. They are illegal and should be deported right when the authorities find this out in my opinion. I don't understand how they are given probation and allowed to stay here when they are here ILLEGALLY.
Yeah crossing the border illegally is just a "victimless crime". Yep.
I beleve that these people are breaking a very serious law one by coming here illegally, however they are not alone in the blame, the employer had a hand in it i am sure, people who steal someone elses good name should be red flagged for the rest of their life as a thief of identity, just the same as someone who has committed a sex offence has to be regestered as a sex offender wherever they live.
Bad is putting it lightly.it can ruin peoples credit.sadlle other people with debt that do not owe, which they then have to disprove...to clear it up...one more thing...terrorist activity is also linked to using fraudulant papers...sure, they maybe able to trace it back...but by then people may have lost their lives...too little, too late...my question is why they werent prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law then deported?

EDIT- one more thing.I live in the Miami area..many there use these types of papers for jobs and the like...recently, some busts have occured to a ring that has produced these papers...they were selling them for 500.00 and up...
The part that bothers me is that people and companies who are pro illegal immigration do not seem to care that they are engaging in identity theft and any misuse of a person's social security card could stay with them for years and years. Everything is tied to your social security number, your identification, your credit, your livelihood, etc.

Identity theft is very serious and causes serious harm to people. I wonder if we can hold the company that hired the illegal immigrant and looked the other way when their social security number came back as a mismatch responsible for the harm done to those that have their identity stolen and all the expense in fixing the issues...
Why are we being so nice? Mark their forehead when a serious crime has been committed. . permanantly. Better than cutting off your hand.
Yes this happens primarily and initially after you throw out you details (that have not been thoruoghly destroyed) and into the bin.

These thieves are like tramps and look for various items of potential value and repeatedly use this kinitecs of movement to steal an identity.

People only have to throw out a single item for the thief to steal - they usually have the nerve to actually stalk you and when you are ready to clean up after the weeks end, BAM, they're there...

I reccommend a few tips - before shreading up material place the paper in the shredder DIAGONALLY as this will make it harder for the thief to find and put together.

Secondly, make up a minor timetable and throw out anything that has banking details or personal "passport" information, say, once a week, then move onto twice a week and finally onto thrice a week and cycle continues...

Thirdly, when you leave the house you should really store the personal information in some sort of room or under the rug at least or in an automatic time lock and password protected safe. This may be expensive and, rarely, inexpensive depending on where you live - but its WORTH it.

Finally, put a cheap or shoddy little camera outside facing the bins that the garbagemen take...This will surely protect you and your identity from these amateur and/or professional "nobodies". Even if they do steal your identity you can get it back through this method and the methods listed above...

Good luck on anyone who's identity is stolen and I hope you will get it back.

If you follow the methods there is a 90% chance that they will never actually get your identity...
I guess that we'll have to make it a crime that is enforced by the death penalty. I'd vote for it and any honest human being should have no problem not putting it in force.
I think it is very bad. Yet many excuse it such as one of the congressmen from Illinois. They say folks are just trying to make a living. Recently Ice conducted a raid in Chicago and shut down a operation where phony licenses and ss cards were sold
The culprit was the father of a local politician!

Yes, those who committed identity theft should be prosecuted. Think about the pain and inconvenience of those whose identity was stolen! The crimes should not be dismissed.

ICE should come down harder on employers who allow folks engage to in identify theft

they turn a profit..others get a headache, pain, shock, frustration and high blood pressure trying to undo the pain of having ones identity stolen.
I think that the government hasn't had to actually deal with this situation first hand. Until a Senator or the spouse of a senator has their identity stolen by illegals nothing will will change.
I wish I could do the same thing and not pay taxes but we know what would happen then.
I am an id theft expert. I actually represent a company, which is the only company to completely restore your identity and not just assist you. i can tell you that this problem is not going away. Right now, 1 out of 4 people are victims, those are out of people who know. Eventually, everyone will be a victim. What people do not know is that there are actually 5 areas of id theft. You named one, and what most people know is credit. There is also medical, criminal/character, and driver's license. Shredding papers helps, but very little. Almost everyone here has applied for some sort of work, or went to school. Well, you information is out there. You swipe a credit card, it is out there. Your mail goes to the wrong house, it is out there. I have an identity theft shield so not if, but when I am hit, I will be completely restored, complete with background checks, medical history, etc.
THe pro-amnesty keep telling me that they get TIN to pay taxes,. They don't perform anyother crime when they come here. I am against illegal immigration because the violation of one law attract others. I wonder whats the law regarding the IRS. They can preprogram their computers to catch anomolies with the tax information they recieve for the SSN.
My mother has had a problem with identity theft. A sophisticated hacker used her bank account to pay credit card bills, and managed to beat the bank's tracking system.
The credit card companies refused to cooperate with the bank and would not identify the accounts where Mom's money had gone. Fortunately, the bank cancelled the payments and gave her back her money. Since the credit card companies refused cooperation it happened the next month. Same results, fortunately for Mom, but that person was never identified.
Identity theft is a felony, I do believe.
What bothers the most about the article for I was already aware of the problem of identity theft by illegal aliens is this,
"Aliens are finding it more difficult to find jobs using the traditional counterfeit documents. So they're willing to commit the extra step to beat the system and get a job. The next step is using someone else's identity."
Why weren't they willing to go the extra step and enter the nation legally and not have to 'beat it'?
In at least one case in Arkansas, an illegal alien "rented" an id instead of simply stealing it. Hmm..think an American would face stiff penalties for such activities.
