One of the most well-entrenched myths about immigrants is that they steal jobs from American workers, collect an excess of government benefits and in general represent a drain on the economy. According to an August 1993 Field Poll of Californians, 39 percent of respondents agreed that illegal immigrants are "taking jobs away from Californians." But these are all myths that must be refuted to create a more hospitable environment for immigrants' rights.

And he isn't counting state costs ('welfare' is very narrow.) Los Angeles County alone gave $1 billion in benefits to illegals last year, not counting education, which is $10,000 per child per year. Do you really think they are paying that much in LOCAL school taxes?

The ones that are here illegally need to go. They can get a job in their home country or stand in line and wait for legal immigration. I am more angry at the employers who hire illegals than the illegals themselves. If these people would not hire them, there would not be a job to get and the will to come here would go away.

What is racist about wanting the laws of this country enforced against all people who would violate them?
EVERY country that is not a 3rd world pile of dog doo has borders and needs to control who is in their county. The US also has a problem in that hundreds of millions of people throughout the world would love to come here. Since that is impossible we need to have a controlled number that we do allow entry to.
Latino illegal immigrants are the real racists in this argument. They feel that they are special and should be able to come here before people from other countries. I would much rather live in mexico then Haiti or china or ANY sub-Saharan country yet people from Latin America feel they should be given priority treatment.
Besides, immigrants cause more greenhouse gases than if they stayed in their own countries as nature-children and consumed little. But if they come here and do manage to avoid spreading crime and drugs and industrial accidents from an insufficient command of English, then it's worse if they prosper. They will buy SUVs and consume at least as much as a Westerner, so our Western countries get even more of a carbon footprint than they do now, sea levels rise everywhere and the poor Third-Worlders who did not immigrate get flooded out.
No. Enough nonsense. The crisis is serious, and we must ban immigration as part of an overall program of greenhouse gas reduction. If we can't control the greedy oil companies, at least we can say no to greedy economic migrants. Plus it will be good for the Third-World. Despots and dictators love the fact that their smartest people, the ones most likely to be dissidents and revolt, give up and chicken out and immigrate to the West. I actually agree with the report, but it's one sided. I see that even though Hispanic business are growing,it's at the expense of older business and non Hispanic businesses. THe African American Business is suffering more from this than other groups. THe reason is that smaller business need to hire translaters or die. The mom and pop ma not be able to afford them and often suffer. I don't begrudge legal immigrants causing the demise, because it is our fault for not monitoring their numbers, but when illegal immigrants are at fault, is when I become concern. The reason Hispanics our growing faster than otehr s, is because in city like LA they Hispanic business has a niche group that they can count on for business. Hispanics are often locked in buying from their own kind,because of language and cultural barriers. Hispanic business can also paoch onto non hispanics. Because they have a wider range of customers, they become larger and leverage better prices . As their prices go down, other businesses than suffer. African American business suffer more, because Caucasian businesses are better funded. several months ago, LA times wrote that independent contrators some times had their income cut in half, because of this effect. THis haas happen before in our history, but this time it's worse, because the immigration demograpphics is a bit one sided. If we had a better diversity of immigrants, one ethnic group could not so easily overpower our indiginous businesses.
As for Illegal immigrants stealing our jobs, There are some evidence of this. In Massechusette, a military contractor was found using illegal immigrants, when it was published that the government arrested the owners and deported th e illegal immigrants, hundreds of Americans lined up to apply for the jobs vacated by the illegal immigrants.
I live in LA, and our unemployment, I grant is low, but according the BBC, illegal immigrants is part of the cause of why our pay has not gone up, despite our economy has grown so much. Employers use CHina and immigrants to leverage their workers to keep their salaries low. Study also show that our pay has gone down for the last 20 years. THere was a time that the average man can provide for his family with a single pacheck. The article states that because the wife now workers, there is an increase in labor source, and it is help driving the paycheck down. Well the same can be said about illegal immingrants. The thing is that I would not deny a woman from working, but I have no obligation to the illegal immgrants.

Most people are in favor of supporting legal immigrants. Legal immigrants are rarely a problem, because they truly desire to adopt American values and become assimilated into American culture. The debate today is not over legal immigration, but rather illegal immigration, which statistically is almost exclusively a Latino problem. There's a simple test that anyone can do. Visit any city or area that has become dominated by illegal immigrants, and ask yourself objectively if the city or area has improved or declined in quality since their arrival. In my experience here in southern California the answer is always that the area has markedly declined over the long term. Income goes down, housing values go down, school quality and test scores go down, the area is trashy and not taken care of, crime goes up, gang activity goes up, and as welfare goes up hospitals are forced to close. In addition, there are endless cries for "accommodations" such as printing ballots in a foreign language, teaching our school children in a foreign language, media outlets such as newspapers, radio and TV in a foreign language, etc. Most importantly, respect for American culture is pretty much absent, a fact not the case for any generation of immigrants prior to the illegals. This is not what America is about. Interestingly, this is typically not the case for immigrants from other countries such as Japan, Korea, China, India, or the Middle East, who tend to embrace American culture, do well, and improve the neighborhoods they live in. Nor do they need or ask for accommodations to do so. It's time to stop this cultural de-evolution into a third world broken model. The simplest way to do this is to enforce employer sanctions and start penalizing employers who hire illegals immigrants. This will put jobs back in the hands of legal citizens, drive up wages, and improve overall cultural conditions.
First of all, how come people who do not agree with the problem of illegal aliens are racist? Just because they don't agree with you I guess. Illegals are a problem in this country. They drive down wages, and increase crime. Where I live, illegals are almost half of the jail population. I'm not saying that all are lawless, but a lot are. And yes, they do take jobs away from qualified American workers. Some jobs in the newspaper and the like want you to be bilingual, because illegals do not want to assimilate. They want to take over, and tell us what to do. They drive down the wages. Who are you going to hire, the one that is qualified and wants to get paid a fair wage, or the two or three that will work for next to nothing.
I have no problem with legal immigrants, but the government goes after them more than they do the illegals. I have worked with illegals, who say they are just saving money so they can go back to their countries and live like kings. They have ruined the neighborhood I grew up in, with crime and trashing the neighborhood. They do not want to assimilate, learn English and act like an American. To them this is just a place to come and earn money because there are no jobs in their country. Maybe they should try to help their own countries, or come here legally.
Some say they do the jobs that no one else wants. This is false because if you try to get a job where they work, they won't hire you. They don't want you around. If they came legally, we wouldn't even be talking about this.
