Was President Roosevelt correct?

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...

There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

--Theodore Roosevelt, 1919

Answer:
Mr. Roosevelt was absolutely correct and America's greatest leader. "Speak softly and carry a big stick". This man not only led the country behind a pew but also from the front lines, he was a true American.
Abso-freaking-lutely correct, a great man the Teddy.
I absolutely agree, and my anger on the immigration subject is directed at illegals and my government which fails to stem the flow. Anyone who comes here legally in my eyes is absolutely welcome, heck they can move in next door to me for that matter. I have lived next to, and around many Legal immigrants in my life, i for one am glad they came.
TEDDY Roosevelt, absolutely.

I wish we could clone him and make his clone run in 2008.

For a number of reasons.
Yes! You won't find many politicians today as honest as Teddy Roosevelt.
i'm not sure how a whole people, like from iran, could fake-out loyalty if they were to come here...i love the idea of taking in people like the japanese...who have assimilated so beautifully...but since 911...and the bush administration pizzed everyone off...hm...i'm thinking TOM TANCREDO is on to something here...close the borders and get things in order, then go on from there, with your house in order
Not only was he wrong, but he is dead too.
Yes, he was correct!
Trouble is, so many in the political arena are willing to sell out rather than deal with the issue.

He is dead, as is Lincoln, but the great ones like a great song, stand the test of time.

Make sure you vote!
Being the best President this nation has ever seen, of course he is correct.
Yes
Voting will make a difference....what a joke.
He was absolutely correct!,
Yes,he was 100% correct.

chiquis, is that you in your avatar?

You look like Christina Ricci,I thought it was her at first lol. You should model!
Here is the problem as i agree and really would like to see every hard working, good character individual, and ardont patriot become a citizen it is unrealistic the point that theordore roosevelt makes because we are in new times. So what makes it unrealistic? A country can only take on so many people before it becomes a poverty problem. For instance lets take two of the top five states with illegal immigrants. New York, California yes these two states are in the top five. Just look at California. Great weather great for vacation, but really who wants to live there? Cant make a decent living there cost of living is to high and what might be the major contributor to that problem? illegal immigration. Its not the only reason, but a major reason same as for new york, houston, parts of flordia, New mexico, Arizona, and recently Colorado. When you get a flux of people that come in illegal hard working and good character or not it drives the wages way down and forces thats right (the american people) the actual citizen to move. Is it right for people to come here illegally and force or uproot us from our State. Is that not unamerican? So lets make them citizens right? Over populate the area and you still drive out people in search of new jobs. I love my fellow southern people majority are great people; however america has many problems right at the moment and until we can fix at least 50% of it its time to close the borders not only to the latin community but to all communities!
I agree with the "American" part but not with the assimilation part. I'm all for cultural pleurisy. Ethnicity doesn't matter. You need not give up your sense of ethnicity/community to be a loyal countryman or woman. And the more languages we know--all the better. It makes us more competitive in the world market. Off topic--I still think sign language should be the international language.
If Teddy were alive today and in charge what do you think he would do to all these illegals demanding... And the pro-amnesty people demanding for the illegals... To the businesses who are hiring illegals... to the countries borders... Teddy didn't mess around with this type of anti-American behavior then. And he certainly wouldn't mess around with it now.
Yes, TR was correct. If only we had a great man like him running for president now! Multiculturalism is a weakness, assimilation is a strenght. We Americans need to emphasize what we have common rather than our cultural and racial differences.

To dogpoop, what an idiot! Voting is an essential duty for all American citizens, and I don't mean voting once every four years in the presidential general elections. Vote every election, especially in the primaries where you have plenty of choices!
Answer: Just so I have the privilege to star this question once again...
That IS the concept of America!
Dance around all that will...America's concept of a republic is the best form of government, from a personal freedom perspective EVER conceived by mankind to date!
Teddy used words in such a way that were understood then even as today...
Except for those with dishonest and underhanded intent. They distort, lie and deceive to this day! Criminal invaders then as now!
He was correct . BUT did he expect for people to forget where they came from?

I call myself "American" (ashamed sometimes b/c of all the hate I see around me) but I will NEVER forget where I came from. Having experienced extreme poverty in my childhood taught me to be generous, humble and most of have an appreciation of what I have (which I worked for extremely hard).

Some people don't understand thought that not everyone is the same. A lot of the people I see every day are people who don't expect everything to be handed to them. They assimilate to this culture, they learn English, take classes to at least get a GED, work 2 or 3 jobs --- BUT they are still not accepted here! What else would "America" like for them to do?

Yes they did come here illegally .. but they had no choice! Do you really think their government could be changed over night? What are they expected to do when their families depend on them to be able to feed them?

I know that if there were no jobs here in America and my family depended on me to feed them, I would definitely leave --- even if it meant going into another country illegally.
