Why does the US call foreigners 'aliens'?

Answer:
Because anyone from a foreign place is an alien. You watch too much star trek

WWwwoooooOOOOooooOOOOoooOOOOOo...
Take me to your leader!
It's how the word is used.
look up the definition for alien. it means a foreigner, someone from another place. aliens were used as a term for space creatures in movies, but illegal aliens means foreigner.
because they are not "citizens" and they werent born in America, so they call people aliens, its retarded i tell you, but what can i do?
Because they are "alien" to our country. They do not belong here, have no real moral or ethical right to be here and the only reason they are allowed to stay is because people keep voting idiots like teddy kennedy and bush into power.
Its just a synonym for "foreigner". There's not supposed to be any value judgment attached to the word, though that seems to be happening lately.
Its the correct term . That's why .
Because that is the definition of the word! Foreigners with an allegiance to another country makes that person an Alien. If an USA citizen were visiting Mexico, then they would be an alien in Mexico.
Alien means foreigner. In recent times, it has picked up additional menaings, such as space alien. But it has other negative connotations (to alienate).
They are trying to de-humanize them, so it is easier to excuse inhumane treatment towards them.
Because that's the proper term. It's used in the Bible to discribe strangers in another land as well. It's in the dictionary. The first usage certainly wasn't from sci-fi. It's not ment as an insult. If anyone is "offended" it's because they're looking for something to be offended by.
Many racist people just refer to Mexicans as "aliens", but there are plenty of aliens here from all over the world.including Asia and Europe.
Those that are here illegally are by law, illegal aliens.
Because they come from a country that occupies a different space? (its a joke)
Maybe their Vulcan?
because they have noting else to do with there time
so they have to come up with something to call them and to insulted them like all the other names they do and you know
In law, an alien is a person who is not a citizen of the land where he or she is found. If an alien resides in the country, as opposed to being just a visitor, he or she may be called a "resident alien".

It's funny how a simple question can turn racist HUH? --- look at a few answers from above.
because they are the enemies or the invaders
however the correct definition is undocumented immigrants
As others have said, it just means "foreigner." They are synonyms.

Also, it is possible to be a LEGAL alien. That previous poster must not remember Sting singing:

I'm an alien
I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
to put down everybody else who is not American !
you see the ' alien ' word only appears in the American dicctionary as "foreing" ,but to make that word valid as' forenig' got to be back up for any other lenguage !!
the funny thing is that the rest of the lenguages translate that word as "extraterrestial" meaning "not from earth.
SO OFFITIALLY THE WORD alien DID NOT MEANS FOREING ,
IS JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR AMERICANS TO TREAT YOU LIKE **** IF YOU ARE NOT ONE OF THEM!
Before the word ever meant anything else it just meant 'foreigner' and it is written throughout our laws (and England's).

Little green man references came hundreds of years later.
lol...they certainly seem to be more like "aliens" and they should go back to their own world.hopefully it IS in outer space. Hey, if we find water on Mars, maybe they can start their own "Raza" there!
