Why is it that I get asked if I am a legal citizen all the time??

I just went to renew my license and gave the clerk my expiring license and my SS card. Yet she still asked me if I was a legal resident\citizen. Illinois IDs have digital signatures and have pictures and other identifications in the database yet they still asked me that. Not only there but whenever I anywhere I need to present and ID I get asked. I see the white or black people ahead of me in line, not get asked those questions but I get singled out because I am latino.

Answer:
Welcome to my world. I get asked for an ID all the time. My wife who is white does not. One time at a Texas Ranger baseball game, a white woman attendant came up to me and asked if I had a ticket. She did not ask my white friend or any of the other white people sitting around us. My friend who has A tendency to get overly dramatic jumped all over her case.Another time at the Phoenix airport I walked up to the check in counter. I was greeted this way by a white woman attendant " You are going to get searched". That was all she said to me.She did it in an aggressive tone. First time I have ever seen this woman.I could tell alot more and worst. Hey vato, just remember their is no racism out there from white people.

John S, I am talking about things that happen before the illegal issue came up. You sound like a pendejo kid when you use the childish DUH word.. But you know what this same white people that are racist can always come up with an excuse.
I get asked all the time in California, and I'm white without any accent at all. To avoid 'racial profiling' they are askiing everyone. I suspect Illinois is supposed to, as well.

The DMV also runs your SS number while you wait and checks addresses and basic ID info against the person in front of them.

OK, then it has changed since I lived there. In that case, unless they are now supposed to mark it on your license (as they do in some states) I have to go with Angela. They are just curious, and nosy. But people are.
I am white, and have an Ohio accent, and I still get asked all the time if I am a US citizen
You aren't singled out, this is just an awareness created but the Hate Speech Rhetoric, coming from the Illegals.
I just think some people are curious.Don't take it so seriously.
Because there are way to many illegals invading this country thats why. We need to deport the criminals.
They ask you because you are hispanic and most illegals here are hispanic. DUH!
Well at least ppl don't ask if you're terrorist[I've been confused as an Arab & an illegal lucky me]
Probabley because how you talk. They ask me if i'm legal, they even entered my social security number in the computer to see if it was actually mine. Why do they think I'm fake for? Yes I know because of the immigration thingbut I been here longer & I actually pay taxes.
Sorry, bud, but you are in a group of people being singled out as the biggest problem to the US population since...the Japanese American citizen internment during WWII ? Too many coming over illegally across the borders, and using American resources without paying into the system. Sad to say, so many Latinos contribute to America, but because of the way so many come in, its become a big burden to many taxpayers, and causing a huge problem, so until they issue a National ID card, you'll probably be putting up with that question a long time. Sorry for the inconvenience...can I see your ID,please? LOL <sorry, couldn't resist! >
Ya Think? Most people don't want illegals here anymore. It isn't rude, but the next time you are asked that question tell them unless they have a good reason to know anything about you and where you were born, you won't give it. Also your SS card is an account # between you and the government and it should NEVER be used for identification purposes.
I have been carded and asked about citizenship when I applied for a new license. No big deal, it is actually good that people are asking in my view.
I was told I had to actually show my actual social security card to take my driving test. In the past one simply wrote in the number when I asked why, I was told due to the high rate of fradulent id's that are used by Mexicans.

Yes the lady at the Secretary of State office actually said "Mexicans".

So if you have a heavy accent they are probably trying to see how you respond;
legal or not legal?

lots of people in Illinois around Aurora, Waukegan, and Chicago are NOT legal residents of the US
that's funny because I am a white American Citizen and get asked that all the time... on employment applications- even though I have a SS card... I had to show my birth certificate and another form of ID to get my Drivers license, I had to show a second form of ID to get my license renewed, I was asked and had to show proof for my child's birth certificate, and many other reasons... so if you are being singled out because you are Latino.. I must be getting singled out because I'm a female... huh...or it could be that it is our law.. and they ask everyone.. and you are just trying to spread racism and hate or you are extremely paranoid
I sholdn't think that to tell people that you are an American citizen would be much of a hardship. Either you are or are not. I wouldn't hesitate to proclaim that I'm an American. Do you resent that whites or blacks aren't the questioned people? I would think that everyone would be questioned because all Mexicans or Illegals are not brown. Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper, tell them how you feel and what you experienced, Latinos should not be treated any differently than any other American citizens. Illegals, now that 's another issue entirely.
In the USA, dark skin marks you as a suspect. I find it strange that having been born here you haven't learned to live with it yet.
I know of a case in which someone bought a Puerto Rican Birth Certificate and Social Security number. This person is here illegally and went to the DMV to get a license with this other person's identification. Some Puerto Ricans (American Citizens) sell their identification to illegal aliens. These illegal aliens pass off as Americans and often don't get caught. The problem with the person, in this particular case, is that it seems the Puerto Rican that sold him those documents had sold it to other people as well. When the illegal alien went to the DMV to obtain a license they told him that his identity had been used by someone else. Since he is an illegal alien, he panicked and said nothing and just left the DMV quickly. Many people obtain US Passports and other US benefits with Puerto Rican identification. The government is catching on to this trend and doing something about it. Don't get offended because you are being questioned about this, they are just doing their job. I know it seems discriminatory but others that are trying to get by on the government by doing illicit things are making it hard for you and me. The fact that you don't speak English with an accent doesn't mean that you are US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident. I know many foreigners who speak English perfectly and are neither Citizens or Permanent Residents.
It doesn't make sense if they have all that technogoly to assist the process. There are so many illegals in the country that people just ask, i guess.
Probably the same reason I would be asked if I were trying to get a drivers license or anything else in Mexico.
I get asked if I'm a legal resident of the United States and I am white. I was under the impression it was standard procedure.
It's terrible, those people don't know jack squat. Hope none of that happens to me.
