Is it ok legally to change someone's surname?

Answer:
It is possible to change your own name, and it is also possible to change someone elses, given the other person is one of your children.
Professional surnames such as rank, field or Dr. type surnames require backing by paperwork and experience usually.

Family surnames I think could be changed or removed legally fine however.
my mum changed my surname years ago but i had to make it legal thru deed poll when i was 17,so yes you can change it
you can change your own name but not anyone elses
You can certainly change your own but not one belonging to someone else
Only your own....
YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANYONE'S NAME APART FROM YOUR OWN.
Yes that's OK.
I susppose you mean to change your own. In the UK, a woman can chage her surname to her husband's when she marries. Others can do it by deedpoll. 'By Deed Poll, you can officially change any part or all of your name. For example, you can change your forenames, surname (or both), add names, remove names, change the spelling of your names or rearrange your existing forenames. You can change your name by Deed Poll as often as you want, at any time and for any reason provided it is not for deceptive or fraudulent purposes.'
yes you can. i went to a solicitor and did it by deed poll.
Yes. Women do it all the time when they get married.
It is legal to change your name providing it is not for an illegal purpose.Deed poll is only one way,you can change childrens name when you adopt them including first name.I did this.when people marry sometimes both parties take others surname thats where double barrelled names usually come from.
It's OK to change your own name unless you were doing it for fraudulant purposes.
Agreed, you can call yourself any name you like, provided its not for illegal reasons, eg if someone left money to people called Smith, you couldn't change your name to Smith in order to qualify! You don't need to change it by Deed Poll - you just adopt the use of the name you choose. Some banks, etc will tell you you need a Deed Poll, but this is not true. This right dates back to a Court case of 17-something when the judge said it was an Englishman's right to use whatever name he wanted - and so is enshrined in British Law.
Only your own - not another persons.
