What is your immigration story?
Answer:
I really appreciate you pointing out the human element in this debate, it really seems to get lost...
Mine is a good one, I was one of the fortunate ones...My parents came from Mexico legally, back in the day, it was much easier to come here legally...My dad worked hard, even served in the army and retired from the post office...My mother also worked very hard, but at home with us kids...We are 1st generation Hispanics and love our country...We have all done well, graduated from college and have wonderful families...I married a Mexican national, he is Spanish though, his parents fled Spain to Mexico during the Spanish war, as refugees. They were given a choice, either go to Mexico or Russia, obviously they choose Mexico.
My husband and I met and later got married, and I sponsored him...It was relatively easy, we filed all the paper work ourselves, and in 6 months he got his resident card...Another happy story...
But, I do see the dark side of illegal immigration and how people exploit the system, or how these immigrants get exploited as well. Its a problem where there are many victims, like children born here and there parents being illegal, or abusive business owners who exploit these workers.
The immigration laws need to be reformed, where they are fair and humane, while punishing those coming here to seek to do harm...This forum is just not big enough to explain...But I think you get the jist of what I am saying...
I was born here. my parents were born here. my grandparents were born here. my great grandparents were born here. my great great grandparents were born here. my great great great grandparents were born here.. i think you get the point.
My mother's family came to this country from Scotland, in 1640. My father's family came here from Ireland, in the 1780's.
my grandparents are from germany, they came here during ww2. not all germans supported what was going on and many left the country..that's all i know, they didn't want to talk about it.
I was born in New York City. (Newyorican) My parents are from Puerto Rico. My mothers side of the family were descendents from Spain and Mexico. But for 4 generations they were from P.R.
My father's side emigrated from England to Spain to Puerto Rico. 2nd generation since.
Most people generalize hispanics as illegals. Especially if they're Mexican. However, they overlook that Puerto Ricans are American Citizens as well. However, we are overlooked.
I work for an immigration detention center. I see both sides of the story. Some you feel compassion for, and others you don't. It kind of depends on why they're really here, and their attitude towards everything. As for my family, my grandparents were from Mexico.

Not quite the Brady bunch still just as entertaining
on my moms side my great grandmother was from canada and married a u.s citizen. on my dads side, my great grandmother migrated from russia to the united states.
I was born here, so were my Parents, Grandparents, Great-Grandparents and most of the Great-Great Grandparents (the foreign born ones did come in legally).
A good deal of my British ancestors did come into America though when America was part of Britain.
I stayed inside of this warm comfortable place for several months. I had food and water. All was great, until I felt like something was pushing me down. So I travelled down this tunnel and found myself in America.
That's my immigration story. Thanks
immigration to america sucks when u just happen to be middle eastern... they treat u like a terrorism suspect! thats what i went thru... waiting in a special room for 6 hours after my flight landed and being asked the same questions like interogation more than twice by different authorities and they dont even grant visa easily anymore... immigrant or non-immigrant types...
My mother is from Germany but she emigrate to Mexico and i haven't father
I came here legally of vacations but my wife was pregnant (5 months of pregnant) and she had our premature baby and my daughter was in the hospital for 4 months (i had some savings then i used to survive here), in Mexico i had a job, I'm mining engineer, then i had a good job in Mexico and the mining company paid all the medical attention for my wife and my Daughter, but 4 months later, when i called to my work there was a problem because i was fired, my house, my car and my furniture was from the mining company, then when i was fired i had nothing then i had to staid here illegally because my permit expired, i looked for a job and i found it easy, later i worked by my self (fixing computers) and now I'm here fighting with all this people who don't want me here, ha ha that's not true, all of the people who i know here in this city all the time makes me feel good.
Now i applied for a job in Mexico again, I'll go back there the next month and I'm so grateful with the American people, some times I'm just kidding about my answers because they insult me and insult my people. but that's my story,
Sorry about my English I'm studding and some times i visit Y!A to read and practice.
One more thing, my "american mother" (a nurse who helped us too much) helped me to tramit an ITIN number from IRS then, i've never used a somebody else SSN and i'm paying taxes with that number, and i used that number like SSN to get my first and last check from the company who hired me.
About the immigration reform i would like it been put under all the americans voting, i don't need an amnesty but some people does and would be great if the mayority of americans be agree with that reform.
When I was four years old, my parents brought me to America in the hope of finding better opportunities. We left behind political strife and limited opportunities as we emigrated from Dhaka, Bangladesh to this country. Although politics was always considered taboo in my country and even in my home when we moved here, I learned, being the sometimes overly curious and opinionated girl that I am, that I could not keep from spilling out my opinions about politics, and miraculously, I now have my parents' support in pursuing a future in political science as I go to college next year.
OMG my family history go's way back early 1800s. My parents comes from Spain. Then my great great great grandparents move to Tampa,Florida when Florida before it belongs to Spain. But there thats much to say & we still live in Tampa,Florida. And so all of you negative people don't tell me to leave because we Spaniards we are here first in Florida!!!
