If not "amnesty," what will get people to come "out of the shadows?"?
I'm torn, because I can understand not wanting to reward an illegal act with a path to citizenship, but I also see the desired end--getting people documented and in the system--worthy of less-than-perfect means.
(I understand punishing employers, but if the factory gets busted, the immigrants are just going to take jobs that are only farther "under the table." It's way too costly to go door-to-door, realistically.)
Thoughts? I've yet to hear another realistic solution...

Micky: So you know that illegals don't want legal permanent residency because...? Did you ask all of them what they want. You need to stop talking about a group of people who you hardly know!
I say that we give legal status to those people who can prove to us that they deserve it. There's people who have lived here illegally over 10 years. If any of them can provide us that they deserve it with a clean record (no criminals) --- will STAY OFF government aid --- (or they'll be deported) and MUST be able to keep a job! That's more than enough. I would also say they have to pay the $5K fine and pay back any taxes owed.
There's time where I ask myself, if these people don't want to give illegals a chance, how do they expect for the current problems (which are all being blamed on illegals) to disappear? Examples: welfare, hospitals, health care costs, low wages for unskilled workers, etc.
Not giving them legal status will only make all of the above problems worse. Like you said, it will only make them go deeper into hiding. Do you really think businesses would care to pay at least a couple of their employees cash-even if it means paying them $4 an hour (they would still make more money here than in their home countries)? It could create a conflict during the "tax" month but you know they could easily write it off . they'll just come up with bogus expenses.
ONE MORE THING: Before we document them, we must stop the flow of illegal immigration. Build a wall and hire more ICE agents to stop the flow of illegal immigration. We also need to lower the # of LEGAL immigrants that come to this country every year. We let 100's of thousands of people in every year and I think it needs to SLOW DOWN drastically. I don't mind having people come here but not in such big #'s ......
Anise, did you know that many of the illegals don't want residency, they want the indefinite temporary status in this bill? What that means is they can work here forever if they want to and not have to go back home, pay any fines etc.
Shorty, I live in Az. and I know them all too well.
You are correct in your observations.Don't let anyone tell you different.
Sara, the proposed bill does support a national data base and the I D's are tamper proof and also picture I d to use with the data base which will bring up a picture to compare with.No big brother problems there.
Let local police get involved.Have ICE agents stationed at every emergency room.
The current immigration bill does not close the border, it only pretends to. That's the most important problem. The second major problem is that the bill give the government only 24 hours to do a background check on an illegal before issuing them a visa. That's way too dangerous. Some of these people, not many but some, are very dangerous people.
Also, the current bill provides illegals with "z visas" before any "punishment" is doled out. Worst of all, the bill would then gives the "z visa illegals" more rights and privileges than the current legal immigrants in this country. That's just plain wrong.
They should be allowed to a path toward legality, the "punishment" should be fair, but they shouldn't be given a bunch of rewards and perks.
Take the politics out of the immigrations problem. Make sure nobody comes across our border undocumented, but make sure they are able to come through documented. The illegals already here come forward to get visas, live here out in the open, and get a path to citizenship. That's it. No perks and rewards.
first we need to seal up the border and stop the flow of them coming in. that should be priority number one. if the bathtub is overfilling and water is spillling on the floor, you don't start mopping with out turning off the faucet first. They need to do that, then start documenting people. maybe a national ID, and you can't get hired without one. the ones that want to stay will have to get the card or go home. as for deportation, if you catch them commiting a crime bye bye, otherwise, there is no way you can deport that many people.
completey agree with you & wickedlooks
bravo
I agree with you, even if they broke the law by coming here illegally it's not practical to deport 12-14 million people. The cost alone would far exceed the benefit to society. You'd have to convert the entire US army into ICE agents to get it done.
The only people who will not "step forward" are those w/ criminal records like narcotraffickers, robbers, gang members etc. and that's where immigration enforcement SHOULD be concentrating, to get these people out of the country.
p.s. if it's as simple as just getting a national ID card to work, then all the illegals will just pay $100 to get fake ID cards. so that's not a real solution. What they would need is a national database to check against to see if the person is a citizen/permanent resident, but some would say that is too big brotherish.
You can get them to come out of the shadows if you offer them some free tortillas. How about this for a solution:
I like how you think. Here are my thoughts:
1) Build a 12 foot fence with razor wire on top.
2) Post the National Guard on the U.S. side.
3) Arm the National Guard with "shoot to kill" if anyone gets over the fence.
4) Construct a crematorium on the U.S. side.
5) Throw any illegal alien dead bodies and cremate.
6) Start tossing any of the drug dealers, gang members and general criminals (even in the jails) back over the fence. Put them back in Mexico where they belong,
6) Stop all welfare, food stamps, subsidized or free housing and free medical. None. If they don't have legal status or insurance...no medical. Let them have their babies in an alley.
7) No anchor babies.
8) No illegal aliens in our nursing homes on Medicaid.
9) Offer a free trip back to Mexico for any that want to leave.
10) Then start picking them off one by one if they are illegal. Send them back to Mexico and all of their possessions will be auctioned by the government. The monies will be used to pay back the government for all the services they have been stealing.
The Republican fix to the Social Security Solvency problem is to have a bunch of migrants working here to take care of the geriatric baby-boomers. A free ride!
I must say you are a very smart person. People don't see it when it comes to how to end this immgration debate/problem. The reform bill will help us figure out who is here, what kind of people they are. They will have to pay a fine, and even some people think that is too harsh, but it's better than going back to their home country.
People do not understand that the government won't deport every "illegal" person, they have said that several time, they are just not going to do that. And we cannot let them remain "illegal" here. But you will always see those people say "Deport them all." That is how they feel, the don't want or like to hear the truth because it hurts. I think the bill will pass. ANd i still cannot believe that we have someone on MyTend.com who actually asked a good question and with a brian like yours people will still bash you because they don't understand.
