Should puerto rico become the 51st state? how can americans benefit from it?
Answer:
You know, I don't think they want to be a 51st state. They voted on it twice and both times preferred to keep their sovereignty. Their federal reps want to be more powerful at the expense of PR local govt and are pushing for a bill that would make PR vote again -- only this time WITHOUT allowing the status quo option that won each time before. If PR doesn't vote to be a state, the question would automatically be scheduled for a vote over and over until they give up and do vote to be a state.
I wonder why they think they have to stack the deck so much?
I don't really have an opinion on their being a state, at this point, but they have been a territory forever, so if they really wanted to be a state, I'd be inclined to agree with it. However, this sort of 'shove down their throats' policy is what we've seen far too much of in Congress lately, and I am against the tactic.
NO they should not. There would be no benefit to the USA.
It has been brought before the people of Puerto Rico and they rejected it. They're content with their current status. It would really not make much of a difference to the average American.
The only ones benefitting from the alliance between the US and Puerto Rico is Puerto Rico...They have almost all the same benefits that regular citizens of the USA have...
no
No. Almost every person in Puerto Rico is on welfare. Our taxpayer dollars just flow into the country. It should not be a protectorite of the U.S. anyway. We don't benefit from it now and I sure don't see how we would benefit from it if it were made the 51st state.
The people of Puerto Rico say NO. Being a commonwealth is good enough for them.
No they should not unless the overwhelming majority want it.
Repeatedly the citizens there are saying they aren't feeling it.
They don't see how it would benefit THEM or enhance their lifestyles
Puerto Rico is a burden on the USA. I say give it independence just like we did the Phillipines.
Puerto Rico was offered it.. they turned it down.. instead became a territory.. they have all the same benefits except for voting... they are having financial difficulties right now.. so I'm sure it won't be long before it's on the table again
Yes. They aren't currently paying taxes so they will have to pay taxes whren they are a state. Each time they vote they get closer to becoming a state. We will also have to make a new flag with 51 stars.
No. For one, many are poverty-stricken, and would immigrate and contribute to our financial problems here.
For two, they resist the idea - why would we want to force them?
