I am getting a year-long Japanese work visa. My US passport expires in 6 months. What are my options?

Answer:
You can get a new 10 year passport before you go, or contact the American immigration about getting a new visa at The American Embassy in Japan in six months.
Apply for a passport renewal.

That should be all you need to do.

Do it now, though. They are backlogged on passports.
renew your passport before it expires, then next time, renew it in Japan.
