Has it started already for all those self-employed?
Well today he gets a call saying he cant start the 6 month project hes been promised because hes been undercut by a polish team.
I think its the start of a slippery slope.
Are any of you other self-employed guys worried about the cheap polish labour thats being offered?
Answer:
start of a slippery slope?
you are witnessing the end of yet another industry in this country due to cheap imports from elsewhere.
my husband is a plumber who was made redundant last year and has only just found another job, which he started 2 weeks ago. while looking for another job he was constantly turned down in favour of cheap imported labour, mainly poles. its disgusting. he has 25 years experience as a plunber but because he wont work for 4.50 an hour he is rejected time after time. our workforce is not being protected and maybe more importantly people are being mislead into believeling that these people can do just a good job. they cant.
this has knocked his confidence big time and since he started this new job he is back to the same man he once was.
people on here will probably slate your question, but the facts are the facts and unless you r in the construction industry and have personal experience of this, i dont think bleeding heart liberals should comment.

It's been going on for ages. There have always been those willing to offer cheap labour, but what everyone should remember is that it's the QUALITY of the work that counts. Too many people have been stung by incompetent foreign plumbers. If you want to employ someone without the proper qualifications and insurance, be prepared to take the consequences. By the way, if your workman isn't properly qualified, your insurance doesn't cover any damage he might do to your house.
' Cheap Labour' has always been around. And always will be.
When I was a child it was the Irish lads who were in that position. And thank God for it too as it let my mum and dad earn a sort of living and put us through college so that we might better ourselves - which we have done.
Have you asked anyone who has got work done in their homes by Polish workers why they chose the cheaper option.
Sometimes the answer might be that they do a better job and turn up when they say they will.
And have you bought products 'made in china'? like from Primark etc.
Blaming people is a potentially dangerous thing though understandable to a degree.
If the Polish are good, reliable, honest workers then they are entitled to any jobs that are on offer if the client chooses to employ them. If they can afford to work for less, then ask yourself why? They have all the same taxes etc to pay and accommodation to pay for just like UK workers so they are obviously happy with lower earnings for a good job done. Are UK tradesmen pricing themselves out of the market?
Cowboys are all the same whatever their nationality but the client has problems identifying the good from the bad. Who gives this country a bad name - watch "Rogue Traders".
As for breaking a contract to start a job. In France the craftsman gives a price for doing a job and if they accept it, the client signs to agree to the work being done. This protects the tradesman from losing the job unless there are extenuating circumstances for the client. It stops them losing out to undercutting. Perhaps your man should try this.
in a war, if you have the marines guarding the mountains the infantry in the lowlands and the airforce in the skiesdefending us from invaders, and the navy at sea, is all very well. but when you have your plasterer, your plumber, your fisherman, farmer, miner, engineer ect ect ect.who are all undefended, from foreign imported people or goods, britain will be defeated by economic warfare, brought here by our own government who are supposed to defend this island, but wont.
the british native is despised by the gov and is being wiped out economicaly. its an act of war against us by our own government and we have no defence, because of the appauling amount of traitors who are making money betraying the british native.
Am self employed. People from abroad try to undercut me, in fact they do. If you want shoddy work, fine go for the cheaper option. If you want work you can trust, hire me.
The thing is that the same thing is not just happening here. UK construction workers used to work in Germany as they undercut the workers there.
Also, Poles are not just working for cheaper rates here, they are also doing it in Germany as well.
Once upon a time the people doing 'Guvvy Jobs' for cash were natives of this country - unfortunately now the rest of the world and his brother seems to be here wanting a piece of the action!
It must be difficult for many self-employed in the UK, but those who have built up a reputation for quality, reliability, service and price have nothing to worry about.
The rest is a free for all cowboy market.
I would think twice about giving the work to someone who could be on the next plane to Warsaw 10 minutes after being paid.
For Emiliano. Thanks for the link cheered me up no end
Many employers prefer cheap labour to skilled, so people are now finding they have short term unsecure contracts.
As for self employed people, as others have said; if they are members of a trade association and qualified then their work is guaranteed.
Thats no guarantee that they will be able to stay in business though; as many people want everything done on the cheap then want to complain its rubbish.
Your husband could try advertising his business in a different way. Stress his qualifications, experience, guarantees and make sure whoever answers the phone to his business is articulate, and is polite and efficient.
It was John Major (Conservative PM) that signed the Maastricht treaty (against stiff opposition) that led to the current situation on European immigration. That was after Thatcher smashed the unions.
Blaming 'liberals' for the problem solves nothing and doesn't even get the right target. It was the Right that brought this on with their anti union policies, Free Market Economy and Adam Smith Institute economics.
We've lost apprentiships, staff training for real skills and qualifications, long term contracts, decent working hours and are stuck with 'as and when required' contracts. Then we wonder why everyone is so stressed and wages are low; and why we can't make anything any more.
We are dispensible, disposable and replaceable to the Right. They don't value skills or individuals.
The start...? Wake up! Unrestricted and illegal immigration hurts all of us in the long run, but nobody seems to care until it's *their* job that's affected.
