Should every person who wants to live in the USA have to speak English?

Answer:
i suppose if one wants bigger and more intrusive government controlling every aspect of our lives--yes.

look, vast majoriity of immigrants encourage their children to learn english and become mainstreamed.

but you are missing an opportunity here--it is a PLUS to be multilingual. the english only movement is just a thinly disguised attack on latino immigrants. Example: the national anthem has been sung and recorded in numerous languages--only when it was sung in spanish did it invoke ire and the opinion of the president that it should only be sung in english. how very sad our country is losing its ideals.
Yes, yes, and yes.
they should unless they live in new mexico, texas, louisiana
no. should that have a working level of english? yes
No They do not have to, but it would be better if the did have at least a working knowledge of the official language
Millions of other immigrants that came to the US learned to speak English. It is only right and fair that every immigrant learned English!!
Although we are a land of immigrants, each citizen of the United States should learn to read and speak English.

In order to understand American laws and culture, immigrants need a healthy command of the English language; it's simply practical. However, as American citizens, they would be allowed to speak whatever language they wish, but it might be difficult to order a cheeseburger in Arabic, right?

I've met foreigners who speak English better than American citizens. Perhaps we should deport them for their ignorance?
For hundreds of reasons - YES!!!!!!!!

Law enforcement shouldn't have to yell stop in multiple languages to keep from getting sued. Government shouldn't have to print every form in multiple languages. Businesses shouldn't have the extra costs of printing everything multiple ways.

These are all costs that are imposed on US.

Knowing and keeping a persons native language is fantastic, but everyone should have a basic knowledge of english BEFORE they can come here in any capacity except for tourism.

I guess we could as a nation let them remain ignorant and not know any english with them understanding its all on their shoulders. If a cop shoots them because they didn't understand "put your hands where I can see them" too bad. If they can't understand what the judge is telling them in court then they have to provide their own interpreter. Can't read the instructions on that power tool and get hurt, too bad. If we placed this burden on them, they would very rapidly learn english.
Yes! I was born in Europe and I am now an American citizen. I speak English. In Florida, the state I claim as my main domicile, you can go into some stores and nobody speaks English. This really ticks me off. I know some people who have lived in the USA for 20 years and have not learned the language.I think if you are going to live and work here then you need to speak the language and that language is English. If we do not stand firm about this issue, one day Spanish will be the national language.
yes, Have you ever tried to order at mc donalds and been frustrated because the person across from the counter doesnt understand you? Ever been to home depot and had to search for anyone who speaks english? If you have, then this question is moot...
Of course not. Should we have turned Einstein away if he did not speak English? Should we have rejected the victims of Nazi persecution based on such inane criteria?
YES!
They should be required to learn it in order to be considered for citizenship
Yes, they should. It should be the official laguage without question. It's the language this country was founded on. If someone is in Amercia and they don't speak or read English then the burdon should be on them and not on the taxpayer to provide everything in English and Spanish.
In the past when people came to America they came to Ellis Island. They came here for a better life, and do you know what? They all learned to speak ENGLISH why? So they can become AMERICANS. The people that come here now want this to be mexico. Well guess what? It is not mexico. If you want to speak spanish go back to mexico.
I believe the working language should be english but I also feel a second language of spanish should be mandatory and definately encouraged.
Yes English should be required before getting any type of official status/ drivers license, work visa, or citizenship. The fact that half the US company numbers you call you have to choose english, speaks of how powerful foreign people have become in the US. We NEED to make sure we keep The US strong and one way is to enforce the use of english!!
Of course they should.
yes and or at least demonstrate a willingness to learn the language.

except maybe elderly refugees

I would be ashamed to have lived in a country for several years and not know the language.
If coming to the country and becoming part of the culture ... yes
YES!!! AND can we boy cot all the businesses that make you dial 1 for English and have multilingual signs in the windows?
