Visa from Serbia?

One of my relatives is about 20 years old- he served in the military in Serbia; now his family is poor and he wants to come to the US for some work. It is very difficult for somene from Serbia to get a Visa to come to the US- I dont know if he should apply for a student visa (which he'd like to- but he isnt a student)- or a work visa- I dont know what to apply for so that he can at least come here for 6 months and do some honest hard work and make some money for him and his family. Help!

Answer:
Your going to want to try the student visa first then the work visa. From my experience in the balkans its easier to get a student visa. If he has no interest in going to school he can try the work visa but its a long shot for him to get one. Unless he is skilled at something he is probably going to have to stay in serbia.
There is a way to sponsor his visa, but you'd have to do some research on it. My boss did it for her husband's cousin.
It is really hard to get a work visa unless you already have a college degree. The most common work visa is the H-1B for "specialy occupations" which requires at least a Bachelor's. He may be able to swing a B-1 Business visa, but that would be tricky and short term.
