I see other answers talking about pride in their heritage. That is all well and good, then take pride in your heritage. The question is about waving a flag for a country that you have forsaken and left. That has nothing to do with your heritage. It is a political flag and you are disgracing the flag to the country in which you escaped out of your country for. It is disrespect for our government, which you left your government for. That is the issue at hand. Not your heritage. A flag for your country is not your heritage. That is like saying Mexican is a race. Hispanic is the race and there are MANY countries which are hispanic. They are not waving their flags.
Also, learn the language. The asians do, the austrailians do, everyone else does that comes here. You do the same and you should not expect us all to learn Spanish for you. We did not come there, you came here. The decision was yours. Not ours. That is like saying everyone here should learn every language of all incoming immigrants because they came here for a better life. Ok, so we have to take all of our time and learn 50 different languages because others are coming here. That is really stupid, so think about that. Does everyone in your country learn a different language for all that enter from another country? I think not.
Excuse me? I am an American of Mexican descent, first generation.I have assimilated perfectly.I am not a flag waver, and I don't have pride in a corrupt Mexican govt.I do value my heritage, deal with it.Culture and politics are two very different concepts, can you understand that?

Now (especially in the case of Latin American immigrants) they want to be a <insert country of origin> who lives in America.

If you moved to a foreign country how assimilated could you get. It takes generally three generations for full assimilation. This is the way it has always been and it is probably the way it will always be. I don't really care if they wave there flag and speak only Spanish, but I am only going to speak English and if they don't like it, well they can't really complain to me so whatever.
Because they don’t have to all government forms come in any language you need the 9th district said it is discrimination not to supply these forms.

What the illiberal liberals don't understand by enforcing assimilation trends is that they're dooming these people to a life in the shadows. If you can't speak English you certainly can't go on to excel in academics and go to college. They're condemning them to a life of poverty via their compassionate less compassion.
Have you ever tried to integrate into another culture? Its extremely difficult. Many Latinos are just going with what they KNOW because its comfortable and familiar. That is human nature. The Latino community is not the only culture to ever do this. If you look at how communities are set up, you generally see people from the same countries gather together in the same areas because it is something ingrained, it has nothing to do with hating others or trying to avoid people on purpose, its just a natural human action.

It takes 3 or so generations for children of immigrants (legal and illegal) to totally assimlate.
There's nothing wrong with cultural pride and where your family came from. I separte cultural and corrupt politics.

I dont know. That is a really good question. Come to think of it neither do the Irish. Or the Italians for that matter. Wait, niether do the polish. Wait, the german dont either. How many times have I heard a white person refer to themselves as Irish. Blame their drinking habits, hot tempers or red hair and freckles on their background. Why do we celebrate St. Patricks day and wear green? Why are there still "KKK" graffiitti, websites and protests in the US with conferderate flags and racial hangings? Why dont we question that? That or the political corruption, CEO theives, continous curruption in our police departments, media, CIA, FBI. The millions of americans that are caught yearly de-frauding companies of milions and millions of dollars. Are we not corrupt? Besides the major cities, Chicago, New York, LA, Miami, the remiander 80% of our country is third world. Tractors, animals, and worst of all.. third world ways of thinking. Unfortunately, according to Japan and Europe we are the third World country. Oh, and by the way, we also have more people in jail based on population and our crime rates much higher than 90% of the countries out there.
As a proud american I would like to say that we are more corrupt and guilty of flag waving when unneccessary in areas of this world where we dont belong. Iraq, Israel and a ton of other countries!
I must add one thing, since your claim to puerto rico is what it is, many puerto ricans are sitting back wondering why you just made them all look like hipocrites. PR's are the biggest flag wavers of all.
And last but not least, being a frequent traveler I assure you that americans are the biggest ASSES to not ASSimilating and have always been seen as so in other countries.
Actually, they're assimilating just like any other immigrant group. Based on 2000 census data, 92% of second-generation Hispanics speak English well or very well; 85% also speak at least some Spanish. But 72% of third-generation Hispanics speak no Spanish at all.
And lots of other people like to display national flags even when their families have lived here for many generations. Look at all the St. Patrick's and Columbus Day parades, for example.
If our idea of a perfect life is so stupid.why are so many from Mexico dying to come to our country? If we are so "stupid".. get away from us! I guess they think gang life is intelligent..And living with 2+ other families in a one bedroom house, having a baby every year, religiously, is the good life..

There is no need to assimilate into the Anglo culture to be an American, The Anglo majority denied equal right to most non whites for 190 years, that was the Law of the land. The Democratic party and the Nations Court System began to address the issue of legal discrimination and Segregation with the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Voting rights Act,Equal Right Amendment, Affirmative Action, EEOC, Right to use public facilities, discrimination in using local transportation. The desegregation of all white School and Universities, armed federal troops where deployed to the South to forcibly force the white population to allow Blacks into the school system. The Anglo's did not go without kicking and screaming, the Solid Democratic south left the party, and joined the Republican partry over one issue(anti-discrimination) they were racist.The most racist part of the country ,the Southern states form the core of the Neocon movement today.

Because there is a very large group that don't want to be citizens, they only want to work American jobs. That's why some Mexican politicians are now campaigning in the states.
Because they just don't care about American culture, they are about the $$$$ that is why they come here. They could care less about culture, that is why they expect such a giving nation to put our street signs in Spanish to accomodate them and pick up the tab on their healthcare and education. The only problem is that they don't want to learn English in school, they want the other ethnicities to learn Spanish to accomodate them.
I doesn't take 3 generations to assimilate. My dad was 7 when he came to America from Russia and the only time he ever spoke Russian was with his siblings once in awhile. He didn't have an accent and was a US G.I. in the Army during WW11. Just like alot of kids I knew growing up who had foreign born parents,I only learned English.My husband is from Hungary and our son is a total American kid from the burbs.It is all what you learn at home.
