WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hospital and doctor visits in the United States have surged by 20 percent in the past five years and the most commonly prescribed medications are antidepressants, according to statistics published on Friday.
The survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found most people who visited emergency rooms had private health insurance, although the uninsured were twice as likely to use emergency services as people with insurance.
The report estimates that 1.2 billion visits were made to hospitals, emergency rooms and physicians' offices in 2005.

You can blame the pharmaceuticals for this one.They are legal drug pushers, finding and pushing illnesses in this country.No other country do you find a pill for any condition...ITS BIG BUSINESS! I am not going to demean those who suffer from depression, I know it all too well.But there are much more healthier ways to manage this illness than with drugs alone.
The pharmaceutical industry is a booming business...drugs only fix the problem temporarily, thats why so many ppl stay sick.
change in diet would reduce this drastically, along with exercise and not using medical marijuana..but I am a little puzzled as to why you put this in immigration category

Its all about money.some meds give you side effects only other meds can fix and so on...if you dont believe me next time you get meds look closely at the side effects...i took something for an infection and one of the main side effects was death!!
1. Emergency rooms cannot refuse visitors. People who are not insured go there because they do not have to pay.
2. More and more Americans are depressed because they link their self-worth to what they have instead of who they are. Once a person is caught up in the keeping up with the Jones' there is no end. It used to be that people had self worth because they viewed themselves as a unique creation of God. Now, parents raise their kids spoiled thinking buying them what they want is the solution.
The reason is clear -- Americans are getting older.

Illegal aliens are taking advantaged of OUR medical system. They need to go HOME to their original country and get help there.
Chainsaw is essentially correct. I will point out that depression is not always best treated by antidepressants alone, because in some cases, counselling would be of best benefit in the long run.
I would like to note that the rising numbers of illegal aliens who are frequent visitors to ER's and free clinics, especially in border states are not mentioned in the article.
