Canada / U.S.A. Boarder crossing for native indians ??
Answer:
You should also carry your status card with you. The customs inspector is right. You are considered a Native North American and you are considered a citizen of both countries. My ex was a Six-Nations Mohawk whose family lived in both Canada and the United States.
Currently to get from Canada to the US, you only need a birth certificate and a photo I.D.
Being Native, you get the North American Indian status, which means in plain english that you are a citizen of both the USA and Canada. You should not require a passport at this very moment if you are driving but things could change at any moment. You should carry your birth certificate with you when crossing the border.
They are trying to put something in place under the Jay Treaty. The US has agreed to it but Canada hasn't so I don't think it is in effect. It was going to be a special card signed by 4 Chiefs that would be recognized by border patrol. As I said, though, I don't think it is in effect. However, if you go by land you will only need birth certificate and govt ID if you do it before January, at least.
