my Girlfriend is coming to stay with me, we could only get her a 1 month tourist visa. Once she is here is it possible to apply for a more perminate visa? I wanted to try for the Defacto visa but as we have not lived together for a total of 1 year, there aren't many options?

No you must apply for the appropriate visa before you arrive in the country. You cannot change visas once you arrive on a holiday visa only merely apply for an extension of the visa you entered with. It is not Britain. In Britain you can arrive from any nation of the world without a visa and within 6 months become a British national and be given more benefits and government grants than indigenous people of the UK. Australia is better in everyway therefore you must do things properly in order to live there permanently.
