I have a b1/b2 visa but never used it , can i apply for a j-1 visa and still keep the b1/b2 ??
Answer:
Here are the rules for a J-1 visa
yes, as long as you don't overstay or let your visa expire, you can have both.
I have a friend who used to visit the US with his family using b1/b2, and he applied for a j-exchange visa to complete residency training here. he's back in his country now as his j program have ended last year, but he still visits using b1/b2.
Your B-2 is valid for as long as it says on the card. However, your J-1 will only be valid for the period marked on your DS-2019. You can keep both, but you must make sure that you are following the intent of the visa that you enter in on. For example, if you have both visas, but are coming to study, you need to enter on your J-1. If you accidently enter in on your B-2, you will not be able to study. And vice versa, if you meant to enter in for just a vacation, but entered in on your J-1, you need to be in a full course of study, not vacationing.
