Can I get british and/or maltese citizenship?

My mother was born in Malta, to maltese parents. Came to australia 1yr old in 1958, and was naturalised as australian in 1995 (don't think she kept maltese). My question is, can my mother claim british citizenship as the passport (maltese back then) that she came out on was one for a british subject. Also, is malta a british overseas territory now for purposes of applying for citizenship? Will her claim to a british passport be easier if she gets maltese citizenship first (i think she can fairly easily). And finally, can she have all 3 - australian, maltese and british? Thanks so much!!

Answer:
Australia, Britian and Malta only allow for dual citizenship you greedy pigs!

---Dual citizenship was severely restricted under Maltese law from independence in 1964 until 10 February 2000, when all restrictions were removed. Dual citizenship had been allowed in limited circumstances from 1989, but only for persons born in Malta who met specific residence criteria.---

---Dual Citizenship for Australia
With effect from 4 April 2002, there are no restrictions (under Australian law) on Australians holding the citizenship of another country.

Prior to 4 April 2002, it was still possible for Australians in some circumstances to hold dual citizenship, including:
migrants naturalising in Australia, provided their former country did not revoke their citizenship;
Holding a foreign passport did not in itself cause loss of Australian citizenship.---

Because of this and because of the passport she would have had to drop the Maltese to get the British passport (she may have been allowed both but it is doubtful). She would have most likely used her status as a Maltese citizen to get the British passport to get her to Australia. Even if she still had the Maltese and British she would have had to drop one to aquire Australian citizenship because Britian and the Australia only allow dual citizenship (to my knowledge there is no country that allows for triple citizenship).

She is able to hold a maximum of two citizenships. I would guess she's a British Subject and an Australian Citizen who has renounced her Maltese status.

With the British it is possible for you to get whatever status your mother had at the time of your birth. This would depend on when you were born (British rules did change around a bit and as a result information regarding this without your date of birth is unclear).

Maltese citizenship by descent
Persons born outside Malta between 21 September 1964 and 31 July 1989 could aquire Maltese citizenship via their mother if their mother was unmarried.

---From 1 August 1989, children born outside Malta to Maltese born or naturalised mothers acquired Maltese citizenship by descent automatically.

With effect from 10 February 2000, a person born outside Malta between 21 September 1964 and 31 July 1989 to a Maltese born or naturalised mother may apply for Maltese citizenship by registration.---
