I am an American citizen, accepted to a university in Sydney. I already have an ETA visa, but need to apply for my student visa. I was wondering if anyone knew if people from assessment level 1 countries are definitely allowed to apply for their visa within Australia? I am trying to leave fairly soon and am wondering if I could use this method rather than take the risk of having to wait around here for a while... Thanks a lot!

My advise will be to visit the closest Australian embassy and enquire directly. I understand that you are leaving pretty soon but I think it is better to at least get the right information before you leave, rather than facing the fact that you have to exit from Australia before able to change your visa status.
