Does anyone live in the DC Area? If so here is my question.?

Do you think that it is wrong that Mayor Fenty wants to take over the school system.

Answer:
I think the entire DC local government is inept.

So, if the DC schools are run by anyone else, that would be the wiser choice. DC should be run by non DC politicians.

I see nothing in the DC local government that even looks like competency.
I live in DC. The schools are in deplorable shape. The school board has done nothing to fix them. They take the millions of dollars they get to fix them and give contracts to their buddies who in turn do nothing but cash the checks. The entire DC government is inept, just like the person above said.
I'm not sure either way. Something definitely needs to be done about DC schools. For DC to be the capital of our country, it is pretty sad. But at the same time, Fenty seems to be trying to do it all by himself and not consulting anyone.
I lived in the DC/MD area a while back - the schooling system is shocking.

I think parents should be given vouchers so they can choose the best schools in thier area and direct funds to them, instead of the state directing funds.
I lived in DC and just moved to MD. However I basically lived in the District all my life. I think it is a terrific idea of what he is doing. The DC government is corrupt and has been for years. The children are the last priorities on government policy and agendas. The parents are protesting his decision now and attending meetings but you couldn’t hardly find one parent at a rally or community meeting before. Seems like DC is not to keen with change and want to continue to have their kids learn in sweltering, deplorable, insect infested schools.
I don't live in the DC area, but I live in LA, where the Mayor is also trying to take over the school system. I am against it. I have particular reasons in our circumstance, but one reason is pretty much across the board - Mayor run school systems are less accountable to the parents through an elected school board. The mayor's political issues on other subjects can 'weigh in' to compromises not in the children's best interest, as well, which is the reason states put schools under single issue school boards to begin with. They may be debating one issue against another but not whether their political funding for their next general election would be better off if they gave school maintenance and construction to a certain company, or that they may get more votes for their transportation policy if they give concessions on school costs.

I'm against mayors running the school system. If yours has given a specific plan about what is to change and what isn't, and you can vote on that, it might be different. Here, though, the Mayor, a person who took and failed the California Bar exam 4 times before giving up, is saying 'give me the schools, and 'TRUST ME' I'll make them better!'

The fact that the school district, due to immigration, is the biggest construction contractor in the state and has huge contracts to award of course has NOTHING to do with it.

I have to say, I like Deepthroat's idea of school vouchers, and wish we had them too. I never thought I would say that because I am a big believer in the social benefits of public education (non-segregation). However, not so much that I am willing to jeapardize my children's education.
