That would open the Pandora's box of problems!!!!!!!
First of all, it would collapse our entire government aid structure because you would be adding millions and millions and millions of people to the government dole without a significant addition to tax receipts.
Second, if you make Mexico a state, then it becomes subject to all U.S. laws (wages, insurance, lawsuits) and would no longer be attractive to businesses.
The best bet is to leave them as a separate country and help them with their economy. The problem is that Mexico is very corrupt and doesn't believe in freedom and capitalism the way the U.S. does. Basically, roving, heavily-armed gangs control much of Mexico.
Yeah, we want their problems to be ours...really.
Good thought. A merger would be beneficial for both countries. I've asked Mexicans about this idea. They are strongly opposed to it as I'm sure most Americans are.
The greatest benefit for the US is that Mexico would be a new frontier for our young people. It's a wonderful country with vast unexplored resources.
Mexico is its own COUNTRY. And if the worry is about illegal immigrants, many of the illegal immigrants are not even Mexican (even many of those that come across the Mexian/American border are from Central America), so your proposal would not stop that problem.

They would vote against it. They are very patriotic, they do not like gringolandia and would NOT go for becoming a state. They just want to work here, make money and live in their little enclaves in the US, and maybe go back to Mexico someday rich to retire. Also we would be taking on all of Mexico's political, economic and social problems and believe me there are many. We are already exploiting their resources through American companies, and their labor through factories at the border and immigrants in this country. So it's not worth it.

Brilliant. Great idea.You should be the president of US. Imagine, instead of wasting trillions, trashing our international image and losing so many of our soldiers fighting a futile war in Iraq for oil, we could simply annex Mexico as a 53rd state of US. All the oil and cheap labor would be ours. The rich Corporate Americans would continue being richer and workers like me would keep on working harder to realise the American dream and lying to ourslves that we are middle class. Lou Dou, the millionare TV personae and self made champion of the american middle class would become irrelevant and retire early. Mexicans would be Americans and the blame game would be over. I am sure the Mexican president would be excited to be a governor of the biggest and most populous state of US, the world super power.
Why not, you ask? Well, probably because Mexico has absolutely no desire to be part of the US. Mexico is a proud, patriotic, sovereign nation. They haven't asked to be part of us because they don't want to be.
