mostly because of our wealth and power, which they might not resent as much if we weren't so egotistical about it.
This administration has not helped our image over there.

thats not true,I've been to France, Germany, Italy, Swizterland, and I was treated fine. there are rude people where ever you go.
Never experienced what you speak of. So far haven't seen it in: England, Luxembourgh, Netherlands, China, Kahzikstan, Columbia, Trinidad, Germany, Brazil, UAE, Paraguay, Uraguay, Chile, Hong Kong, France, Thailand, Qatar, Kuwait, Taiwan, and South Korea. Matter of fact I've experienced the exact opposite.

As far as Europeans reactions to Americans. ... Sour grapes? Perhaps they resent that they are rapidly becoming third-world nations.

I'm American, but if I go to some country in Europe or Mexico or China, they would never assume I am American because what they know about America. I am Hispanic American, darker/tanish skin color and not white-American as most foreigner would assume is an American but It would be hard to explain myself. I would always say I am American no matter what (because that's who I am). But I can get away with saying I'm not (if I need to or if I would ever run into people/protests against Americans or America).
Well I have been to Other countries and I was actually told my some guys in Wales... that its cause most of the other countries are jealous- You dont see americans fighting to bust into someone else's country illegally for a better life- They want our lives and our freedom.. But hey thats just something we have to deal wit right? Sucks *** but-- IM american and i married a british guy? SO not all countries hate us is just certain people within the country! I have always been treated well when I express that I am an American but then again, I have never been to Europe. Europeans are jealous of Americans and American culture. I'm sure in the 80's everyone in Europe wanted to look like Madonna, Michael Jackson or Prince now they want to look like Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson or Britney Spears (when she looked good). The Beckham's are so ecstatic to be here. They try to put us down but they imitate our culture. They're big time hypocrites if you ask me.
My family and I are treated like GODS when we visit other countries, don't know what the hell you're talking about.
I lived in ireland for a bit and never had much of a problem although I did become mates with a few people who later told me I was the only American they did like. A lot of it is due to our president and what he's been doing.
For the most part though people enjoyed talking to me about the U.S. and my accent.
