Where do illegal immigrants in Australia come from?

I have just read with some surprise that Australia appears to have enough of a problem with ilegal immigrants to have to run detention centers.
Where do these people come from though, and how?
I've always thought of Australia as a place that was pretty difficult to get to due to its distance to everywhere else, and pretty troublesome to survive in unless you have a place in its society.
Can someone illuminate this for me?
Thanks.

Answer:
They come to Australia via boat and sometimes by air (but not as often). Because Australia is an island and so close to Asia you hear about these horrible conditions where people desperate to leave their country pay people (I suppose "coyotes" would be the American term) to take them over via boats (these boats usually don't met Australian standards so they're considered suspicious when they hit Australian waters). I have to admit it's quite amusing to see foreigners in 3 piece suits who have just docked in at the wharf trying to fit in. You also hear rather sad stories about women who believe they are going to be teachers or child care workers and are forced to work as sex slaves who are desperate and trying to start a new life only to be suckered into having sex with 10 different men per day, every day of the week.

The ones that come via air are a bit different. They're smaller in number. They usually get fake passports or use their own and overstay their visa.

Australia, like most countries is fairly multi-cultural. You can find a little slice of home if you know where to look and most people start with religion (go to temples, mosques, churches find like minded people then go from there). There is no free health care for illegal immigrants and aquiring a job can be difficult without a Tax File Number but there are ways around this such as charities who are on the look out for travellers to help them out for a week or two, you can also borrow people's health care cards or pay for it.
They usually come from souther Asian countries or middle Eastern ones. Border control catch them arriving by boat and place them in detention centres. I suppose Australia is a difficult place to get into, just because of border control and immigration officers.

As far as I know some of the people in the detention centres are waiting for their asylum application to process.
