Canadian citizenship?
Answer:
There is no such thing as automatic acceptance for immigration. It takes approximately 9-10 months and you have to apply in Canada and remain in Canada throughout the process.
See www.cic.gc.ca
No, you have to appy like everyone else, but it is well worth it!
It will sort of be like becoming a permanent resident of Canada, but not a citizen. It's like a Canadian marrying a US citizen and they are then able to get a green card. You will be able to work and live in Canada if you marry a Canadian citizen.
Why do you want to move to Canada though? You guys should stay in the US! Canada is too cold, and I know that because I live in Canada.
No, he does not automatically become a Canadian citizen. First he has to apply for Permenant Resident status in Canada. Then after he obtains the PR status, he has to reside in Canada for approx. 4 years before he is eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. However, he can live in Canada forever with PR status and does not have to actually become a Canadian citizen, if he doesn't want to. One thing to note - the USA frowns on it's citizens becoming citizens of another country.
To get the PR status, first you must get married, then you can apply either as a spouse from within Canada or if you want to remain in your home country while waiting for the PR status, as a spouse outside of Canada.
There's a great Yahoo group that can help you. The members are mostly Canadian-American couples who are applying as spouses. They can give advice, support, and walk you through filling out the Immigration forms. The URL is:
