Interestingly, the US once got very “tough” on illegal immigration. As noted in Wikipedia, in 1954, the “burgeoning numbers of illegal immigrants prompted President Dwight D. Eisenhower to appoint his longtime friend, General Joseph Swing, as INS Commissioner. According to Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr., Eisenhower had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration immediately when he took office. In a letter to Sen. William Fulbright, Eisenhower quoted a report in The New York Times that said: "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government." Thus Operation ******* began in California and Arizona and coordinated 1,075 Border Patrol agents along with state and local police agencies to mount an aggressive crackdown, going as far as police sweeps of Mexican-American neighborhoods and random stops and ID checks of "Mexican-looking" people. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. 488,000 people fled the country for fear of being apprehended. By September 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas and, all told, the INS estimated that 500,000 to 700,000 illegal aliens had left Texas voluntarily.

We don't need any new laws. We need out current laws enforced. Our currently laws include fines/jail for the employers of illegals & deportation/jail for the illegals.

Mass deportations can be done. And I hope they will be done soon. Start enforcing the law and kicking them out and many people will self deport. It is possible.
That was then and this is now. Employers want the workers and they have learned how to turn around and come back whenever "deported."

some times its good some times its bad. most ways its a waste of money and allot of laziness from politicians to confront the problem head on .
for example criminalization of marijuana started when American government wanted the Mexicans out of the citrus harvests in the south. so they started with a smear campaign about illegal immigration and the marijuana was just a side action of painting the immigrants in a bad light. think about the laws thoughourly dont comprimise a bad bill just to say u got it through .the imagration reform bill is a bad bill as it is, as far as we know after all how many of u on either side have accually read it and that also includes our elected officals trying to put there names to it , dont be hearded by the lemings that scream but present no ideals, and once again thats both sides of any collective issue.

the federal government can change the laws about things like anchor babies , well fare for illegals etc etc etc .. any time they want as u sit reading this BOOM law passed could of been done that ez with little hard work from people to scared to propose any sane legislation cause it might go on record and hurt there chance for re election ...

Presuming that you want actual information rather than to provoke more rants, you might want to take a look at the latest Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, which - beginning on page 94 - summarizes arrests, investigations, deportations, etc for the last ten years. You can see that DHS has not been inactive. For example, in 2005 nearly 150,000 citizens of Mexico were deported.

Bush says we cant enforce our laws & deport illegals, but this country can do anything it needs to for its people, we just need to get a president that cares about us not criminals!
I have been an Agent with the Border Patrol for the last 15 years and I KNOW that if the politicians would let us do our jobs that we could deport the illegals that are here. There is no "quick fix" so to speak. We need to sour the milk coming from the government tit and reduce the incentive to come here. Employer sanctions are a must. A change needs to be made in the processing and removal of illegal aliens. The current procedure is very time consuming. Agents call the computer program (ENFORCE 9.1) ENFORCEment Deterrent 9.1 because of all the problems with it. With Bush talking about his amnesty plan, illegal immigration has started to increase. Just as with the other amnesty programs, many will make fraudulent applications that will be accepted with a rubber stamp. Call your representatives and tell them to let us loose to do our jobs.
