If you want people from other countries to speak english here in the USA, do you want them to be like you too?

Do they have to dress like you, eat what you eat, behave like you do, and stop being proud of who they are and deny their heritage. THEY SHOULD BE LIKE YOU WANT THE NATIVE AMERICANS TO BE. JUST LIKE YOU.

Answer:
People who come into our country and want to be citizens
through the legal process, are expected to assimilate into
the population. To be one with us. No one expects for you to toss away your heritage and not observe things about it. But
as an American, you will be expected to respect and observe
all we celebrate as a country, as well as participate in them
if you choose. You have the right here, to do or not to do. That's why people migrate here, because of the freedoms to
live and do as we choose, according to the laws of our Con-
stitution and state and federal government laws.
If you want to blend in, then you would dress as the majority
does. Even a terrorist would know that assimilating as a
normal citizen he'd go unnoticed. But if someone wears a
Burka, or a costume, he's going to be stared at out of curios-
ity. That's only natural. When in Rome, do as they do. And
that applies here as well.
No. The language is the glue that holds the country together though. We are the United States of America, not the divided states of Mexico North.
No

Just speak english
you're an alarmist...shut up. you're just mad that you can't throw your ba lls around in someone elses house and get away with being the crude **** you are
Stupid question, English is the language used in the US,ever hear of simulation? Duhhh
if can speak english you can't communicate. if you can't communicate you never be like us.
It has nothing to do with wanting another person to be a clone of myself, or anyone else. You miss the point.

They come to this country, and want to live here, earn a living (hopefully), send their children to school, shop in our stores, etc. The very least they can do is try to communicate with us in our language.

I guarantee you that if we go to any south american, central american country, we would have to learn to communicate in their language or get robbed blind, and probably worse.

Grow up. A fundamental request, like learning the language of the country you are in is no "burden" or should not be.
I do not care about all the other things you mentioned but I would like to talk to you and have a common language to do business and be able to talk that's all. I just want to know what you are saying to me and that is hard enough even if we do speak the same language.
no and that's a dumb statement, because God didn't make every one the same.If that's the case, then we would all be speaking the same.Besides, what is wrong with speaking ,English when you not at home?
can someone tell THomasP it's Assimilation?
When I went to Germany years ago, English over there was the second langauge, was back then mandatory.

Look up what Teddy Roosevelt said about immigration when he was in office...your going to have a big suprise.

What next a person not born on our soil for President..I think not!
If they r going to work here, then they should be able to speak English clearly enough that one can understand what they r saying. That goes for Mexican, Indian, Japanese or any other foreign person. I don`t care how they dress, eat or behave, just speak our language well enough that I can communicate with them while shopping, Internet help, or over the phone dealings with any company. I`m sick and tired of repeatedly saying "what, what, what" LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH ! if u plan to work here. Whatever else u do, I couldn`t care less.
What? Wow, back off the Jim Beam.

This question is senseless. They are already trying to be just like us, hence the crossing from their country into ours, going to our schools, holding protests according to our laws, getting welfare/food stamps/SSI from our tax funding.

The least they could do is learn to communicate with the society they are failing at trying to overrun. Sheesh.
America the melting pot of the world. Having said that let me make this point.

You came to this country, no one stuck a gun to your head put you on an airplane forced you to live here. Though I understand the need to preserve your national language, you have chosen to come here. So speak our language.

We don't require you to dress like us, behave, eat and or stop you from being proud of where you came from.

We just want you to remember that you are here in America where we speak, though its sometimes improper, English. If you wish to be in America and benefit from all that America has to offer, is speaking our language such a big thing to ask of you?

Here is my point...bluntly put. You come to America to do more than visit, embrace America's language or go home. No one is forcing you to stay here but I sure do not wish to learn another language just to carry on a conversation in the country I call home. Just as I should learn the native language of a country that I move to and call it home. Why should I expect everyone who is a native to learn my language?

Your in America, speak English or get out.
Assimilation into American culture does not require, and has never required, that one change their diet, lose their pride or deny their heritage.

Refusal to assimilate (as every culture represented in the country has done) is an economic and social death sentence, as it is in any country. To support that refusal (as you have done here), in any country, is to impose that sentence.

.
They can't possibly be that good looking. ; p

A respect for what made America successful will mostly be enough (ie individualism and law). Common sense is a plus...therefore the need to learn English.

I think they should hold-on to parts of their heritage and practice it. Although I would suggest they leave their political views in the country which they came from. Usually they're the reason why they had to come.

You sure do have inflamatory questions and what seems to be anger. I do feel that what happened to the American Indians was incredibly wrong.

That really gives you a semblance of what happens with uncontrolled immigration. I just don't delve into social justice theory. We have to deal with what's happening now and not blame it on the people of the current. Mexico and the rest of latin America is trying to solve why they aren't successful like Europe, Japan, Australia, etc.

Once they realize that, they either chose to remain or adapt. Does that mean they chose to Americanize ('or be like me')? Not necessarily.one can have the virtues of America and not pick everything from it.

Lord knows I love the blues, and I didn't create it...but cultural acceptance is universal. I mean, each individual can be an individual and chose their values. Those that are needed (like good government), and those that are personal (e.g tradition).

I'm not really against a person skin, but I do think cultural relativism is disingenuous to the reality of physical effects. We can assume a role of self-exploration and actually think it through or we can say 'accept me as I am'.and perpetuate and US vs THEM mentality.

I'd rather that not exist. Keyword: Individual.
A common language is what holds a country together. I live overseas and i am trying to learn the language over here. I know it isn't easy and if you have a family to take care of and a job it is hard to find the time. I will never be able to spe ak Hungarian like a native speaker and Americans don't expect immigrants to speak perfectly. We would just like to see the effort. It show respect,People are nicer to me when I try to communicate to them in their own language it is just human nature.People will not laugh at you for trying they will appriciate it.
No we expect them to learn the american ways. They flock over here and want to be here so why cant they take the time to be an american...which is a english speaking country. Dont cry for a better life then ignore the laws and ways of americans.if its so bad then stay in your own country.
