I have a solution for the immigration, unemployment and welfare problems, what do you think about it?
If you need workers to build the fence. Take applications from people desiring to come to the US legally. Upon completion of a two-year service in building the fence they can be granted a green card.
2) Arrest & deport all illegals. All assets can be seized and used to fund the INS so more agents can be hired(this will also help unemployment)
3) Reform the unemployment and welfare systems. Those needing jobs who are able will have 12-20 million jobs to pick from as the illegals leave.
4) Reduce taxes. The burden that will be taken away from social programs can be used to cut taxes for all citizens.
5) Now you can reform the immigration policies so that people can come to the US legally.

Sounds like very good, workable ideas to me. However, for the people in government, this would be too simple. They need to complicate things and have all kinds of hyperbole and ifs, ands, and buts thrown in to confuse everyone. Then, if they are able to pass their BS immigration reform, it will later come out that nothing really changed. I can foresee millions of illegals NOT coming forward to apply for these new opportunities to legitimize themselves because many of them know they won't be able to qualify due to criminal acts they have committed either here or at home or both, so millions will continue to "live in the shadows," knowing also that the government won't REALLY crack down on employers of illegals and so they know they will continue to be able to find work under the table or using fake/fraudulent/stolen IDs and of course they prefer this, anyways, than having to pay taxes and live legitimately. No, I also don't believe the borders will be enforced and nor will the visa overstayers be monitored and deported. I bet you anything, nothing will be changed even if this bill gets passed! There will be all kinds of excuses by the government afterwards for why their promises weren't kept. For that matter, I do not FOR A MINUTE believe that most of the illegal immigrants have any desire to obtain US citizenship. I think that is a fallacy because most of them come here fully intending on making enough money to eventually be able to retire back to their own country or even to make enough money to be able to return home to open a business. They want to come here and use as many of the social freebies they can, along the way, also.
But, your ideas are good, logical, and workable, but far too simple to satisfy the chimps in the government.
One immigration reform I'd like to see, but not likely to happen, is to restore the immigration quota. We claim to be a nation of "equality" and "diversity" - so why are almost all of the immigrants coming to our country Mestizo?

Why don't you apply that to those employers who hire them? They are the ones with assests, not these workers...

I think that welfare lifers are a shame on our way of life. Lots of people need a hand up in life but total handouts really take the cake. There should be a limit on the number of years one can rely on welfare. Training is offered but they just don't want to work. So after two years, they should be cut off. And no matter how many children they've spawned with their live in boyfriends who live in the housing units, they can get help with child care. That's the only break they're entitled to. That would take a huge amount of stress out of the taxpayers lives alone. The illegals need to be deported. And the fence should be electrified as a bit of a greater deterrent. Some pretty darn good ideas.
