Why is it that nobody seems to mind generalizations when they're positive?
The fact is, generalizations are based upon the majority or "norm" for a particular group of people, until that "norm" changes or is proven to be false.
Answer:
Positive or negative, generalizations are not good. For example, saying that Asians are good at math could lead to an Asian child not receiving enough help in school. Another example is a coach saying to the only Black child trying out for the basketball team, "I thought your kind was supposed to be good at this." One should not be judged based on the color of one's skin. I grew up in an area so full of people who thought things of me before they knew me, and it hurt. Imagine going into a store and being followed as soon as you walk in there. How about not being given a job application simply because of the color of your skin or your race? Imagine never getting invited to parties because you were the only one of your kind in your class? Do you get where I am going with this?
Now you're into crazy thinking
You are using the generalization that they are "Mexican", which isn't true by a long shot. They are El Salvadoran, Honduran, Guatemalan, and from every other country you can name south of our border.
They are Illegals.
Wanda: I usually keep them on a shelf, but this was a rare opportunity to correct a misconception. :)
Because there is no rational basis to defend illegal aliens, they seem to seize every opportunity to criticize.
And that is like trying to prop up a house built of cards with
cornflakes.
Their "offense" is transparently racist, and they are quick to accuse others.
because positive things promote better lives for everyone. Negative generalizations come from some smarty pants trying to find a relationship by similar and coiencidental circumstances between people. Like your mexican thing. It's not like the mexican babies are born with DNA imprinting in them to go "I must cross the US border"
And to clarify my response as you have with yours. Would you want to be associated or assumed to be a part of a problem which you are not a part of... simply because some others who share some other physical common characteristics with you... they are a part of some issue. which has nothing to do with you?
And whose fault is it that they don't pay taxes? They work at walmart and walmart is supposed to pay them $6.00 an hour, then take out $1.75 in taxes.
Walmart pays them $2.00 an hour and keeps the other $4 bucks... neither the worker, NOR the goverment gets the amount. Walmart is certainly keeping the taxes instead of forwarding them to the government. In fact, how are they supposed to pay the taxes anyway?
Because everyone likes to hear good stuff about themselves but not bad stuff. And if you say 'they are all hard workers' many will identify with that and feel good about it. But if you say something negative they will know that it doesn't apply in all cases so it will just piss them off
That's a very good point. Most people only like to hear what's good about themselves, not the bad parts. That's like that for all kinds of people.
I disagree with your premise. If you don't believe me, just go around saying that Black people are good at sports. Some people will call you racist. Jimmy the Greek tried to explain the reason why, in his opinion, Black were superior athletes and it got him fired! Later one Black spokesman admitted that Jimmy the Greek's principal reason (selective breeding for better hard laborers) was a historic reality.
How about this one.everyone who is against illegal immigration is a racist.
No one wants to do the work that these illegals do. (Well, who did it before they were here? Duh)
And the most outrageous generalization. all congress persons are intelligent, honest, hard-working Americans like the rest of us.
why would anybody argue against a positive statement? when you figure that out, you'll have the answer to your question.
if someone says americans are cool, you wouldn't say, "hey! that's not completely true!"
but you would most likely say that exact thing to someone who said all americans were fat
its just common sense that people are not willing to fight a positive statement. it makes no sense to do so. why waste time and effort to deny a complement?
Yes there is something to be said about stereotypes. They are true to some extent.
Remember 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', there was a great line, "sanity is majority rules". Now, let's all question reality as we've been fed it.
Dear ID26,
I question your use of "majority" in the second paragraph. It doesn't take a majority for many generalities to get formed. A few rotten apples can spoil things for everybody.
How the US should respond to illegal immigrants is a very difficult question. Probably the best thing we can do is work with the other governments in developing their own country so that their people wouldn't want or need to find a better economic situation here/elsewhere.
By the way, immigrants, legal or otherwise, come to the US from all over the world, not just south of the border.
It can't hurt to remind ourselves again, that we were all once immigrants, except perhaps Native Americans. As a Christian I like being reminded too that we have to look at everyone in this scenario as siblings.
Thanks for this opportunity for me to speak out.

Generalize all you want to I do not care and I do not care if you have facts. I do not care If I do not have a valid argument All I need to know is most of the illegals are coming here to work. I support this people whether you like it or not. There are 2 facts that I know and that is the reason I support them. The majority of the illegals are brown skin Indians from Mexico or further south. These Indians are hated in Mexico by white Mexicans and they are hated by white Americans In the USA. I grew up with this hate in south Texas. Some do not believe me and call me a racist. I certainly did not choose to hate white people just for the hell of it.Maybe I am a racist but that is the way I was brought up. You all telling me it did not happen is not going to change my history
from the answer given it seems to depend more on the subject question than on the answer ...Either way one should be specific instead of general .
it's more about accuracy versus innaccuracy. "they're Hard workers" is largley true, because they are determined to make money- they want to work because that's how you make money, and at 2 bucks an hour, working hard is the only way you're going to get enough to get by.
But "they don't' pay taxes" is not true either- they pay social security and Medicare like everyone else. Many even file income tax returns, in hopes that it will help them if they ever manage to get legal permission to be here.
"fill up hospitals and free clinics" is not true either. nor is it true that they drain public funds. the bulk of immigrants are in their mid twenties and healthy. you don't' get social security until 65. Medicaid only applies if they're injured working for American employers. In short, the negative generalizations you hear are propaganda, the positive ones seem to be born out of observation. You'll find that's the way it seems to be with all groups.
You are right. If someone said that guy is really good looking but not specifically how he is good looking and someone else said that he was not as nice as he looked but did not expound on this statement, who would have really been the most wrong for generalizations? We do know which one he'd take offense at though. I agree.
It's called double-standard egotism.
Ever notice how none of the generalizations about white are positive?
I've never owned a slave, I've never been on welfare, I take care of my kids and my mother, I mind my own business, I never snuck into anyone else's country, home, car, job, etc.
So I guess I'm the odd chick out.
My point being that with any generalization, good or bad, there are going to SOME exceptions.
plain and simple...one is basically a compliment and the other is basically an insult. you wouldn't have a probblem with anybody saying you are a clean person, but you would have a problem if someone said you were a loud obnoxious person.
