it is a little steep, but is worth every penny if that is going to help them be in a legal stand in this country.
and for those that fill their mouth by saying that illegals cost money... every time an illegal alien receives a paycheck there are taxes taken, those taxes are similar to those paid by "righteous citizens" and, in some cases they pay just as much as the regular everyday American citizen, or what? do you think they get their money all paid in cash and there are no deductions to their paychecks?
even more, the money deducted as medicare and social security, is money that cannot be allocated to anything, so the government gets to keep it, is pure profit, where in the case of the legal citizens, they get their money back when they retire.
maybe it will go to replenishing all the money they have been draining from us..
The $5000 fee is a misnomer, Mel Martinez, one of the architects of the so called bill, it already working to deduce or eliminate that fee. A am sure that even if it remains a $5000 their will be enough waivers because of hardships, that little or no money will be needed. If they can send trillion of dollars to their home country, they can pay their own way for the freedom to be granted amnesty. Of course I hope that this amnesty will not be granted, and this $ 5000 will be an mute issue. So if amnesty is granted not only to you want us to forgive the breaking of our laws, you want the tax payers to foot the bill for the processing the illegals. What a sweet deal, for the illegals. As to the money that might or not be collected to give the illegals the greatest gift that others all over the worlds would pay a lot more than $5000, not only to you want to set the price or wavier of amnesty, you have the nerve to say that what we do with that money. My last point is even if each and every illegal payed their fair share, it would not even be a drop in the bucket to pay for the processing of all these illegals
Do you realize how much they have cost tax payers over the years between Medical, Food Stamps,Schooling their children, Prisons filled with illegals. Tax's that have gone unpaid . Hello it isn't nearly enough but we will never see these illegals pay it anyways, the whole think is a crock.

haha, this is so funny. my brother in law is from mexico, he payed way more then that to be a legal citizen of this country he call his home now. he says it's cheap compared to what he payed. the illegals need to stop their crying. they got what they asked for.
Perhaps, we spend BILLIONS on this war, and there is no end in sight..I petition my husband 4 years ago and the cost was under $3,000 and for us, that was a good chunk of change.We filed everything ourselves, without an attorney, yes I think this is too high for indigent illegals, they will only continue living in the shadows.
It cost the American taxpayer $ 20,000.00 in lost benefits for each ILLEGAL . They are lawbreakers .. So , NO $ 5,000.00 is not to much to be LEGAL , when when it cost us thousands for an ILLEGAL. i honestly would not know if it is a reasonable fee...i guess you would have to take into account the cost of trying to become a legal resident and the long time it usually takes...it does amount to quite a bit of money, but i've been watching my local news and people are willing to pay that amount in order to become a legal resident...BUT I DO HOPE THE GOVT PUTS IT TO GOOD USE...hopefully not towards the war!

Quiz is right. I think they should be charged $100 a month as long as they live here, and it should be deducted from their paychecks automatically. How else are they going to pay? 40 years x 12 x 100 =$48,000. ABout 50 grand.

I just want to comment on Froggy's answer here who said they should have to pay $100 per month to be here - hey, that's a bargain! How many American citizens only have to pay $100 a month in taxes off of their paycheques? No, they should be paying a lot more than $100 per month, and NO, I don't think the amount of $5,000 is too high. Frankly, I am not for this stupid amnesty and I still want them ALL deported, regardless of how long it might take and how much it might cost. I feel that the cost savings would be realized within a couple of years, easily. Don't say it can't be done and they can't be found - Oh, yes they can be found and it CAN be done. If the current immigration laws were enforced, as they should have been enforced ever since the last amnesty, illegal immigrants would be found before too long if employers were charged to the max for hiring them, if they were not able to receive any free social benefits such as welfare, medical services, and free education - yes, they would all be located over a period of a few years. Many would return to their home countries on their own steam if they saw that there were no freebies for them here any longer, no free education for themselves and their children, etc. Yes, they would soon pack up and head back home. If police were free to check everyone's residency status whenever they had contact with people, yes, many would be found and deported. As well, stop allowing the "anchor baby" magnet, and many more would return home and future wanna-be illegal immigrants would not even bother coming. If our government simply enforced the current immigration laws, we would not have a problem right now. We do NOT need new immigration laws.
