I don't think most Americans are anti-immigrant. I think a lot of people are afraid...of change, of the loss of their own position in society, etc. I think relatively few people understand just how much we need new immigrants to help sustain our population numbers and working adult percentages. Other developing nations are loosing population and/or are seeing their population grow more elderly. Also, America is not the only national having a lot of debate over immigration.
Most of western Europe is in turmoil over immigration: how much is enough or too much, what responsibilities do immigrants/current citizens have, what are reasonable expectations of assimilation/intergration...
Legal immigration is fine. Shall we reward 20 million people who broke the law to come here while others waited in line?

Americans have always accepted immigrants, LEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Our country was built by immigrants, and up until the Mexicans started their INVASION, immigrants have always integrated into our society. What makes the Mexican LAWBREAKERS think that Americans will accept them if this AMNESTY Bill gets passed? If they are willing to become legal slaves for corporate America, then how can ordinary Americans have any respect for them?

My biggest gripe is to go to the store and hear more foreign language than my own! Most employers nowadays want you to know spanish before youre even considered for a Jjob! I grew up inhj America and had no intentions on leaving, so I didn't learn any other languages, now I'm the one that has a harder time getting employed. If I was going somewhere else I'd learn enough of their language to get around.
If your braking the law IT'S NOT OKAY. Would it be okay with you if I came into your house and started stealing your things. Then told you it was okay because I'm going to take your garbage out to. Illegal Mexican workers are are siphoning money out of our economy yet were told it's okay because it's jobs nobody wants. Who did those jobs before the Mexicans started crossing the border in waves. You just can't let illegals come in and steal jobs any more than you would let me steal the stuff out of your house!!

Naturalization of new citizens does not instill American values and ideas upon those who are coming to our country. Moderate, legal immigration is acceptable. What we are against is explosive, uncontrolled, and ILLEGAL immigration.

I actually think the emphasis should be placed on the people who hire illegal immigrants. These are people who don't want to pay someone minimum wage for physically backbreaking dirty work done under the worst of working conditions, so that they can reap a bigger profit. We should be worried about rounding these people up and prosecuting them. Then employers would be forced to hire unskilled laborors at minimum wage and would be required to provide breaks, clean working conditions, etc.
The only problem with that, of course, would be that they would just pass the increase in cost along to the consumer. Somehow, we need to make big business pay.
I don't know where you get such an idea - I find the American communities to be very welcoming to immigrants, of the legal kind.

Immigration is fine. Got no problem with someone immigrating to this country legally. People that immigrate here legally, with the intent of becoming a citizen, are not the problem. I take exception to people that sneak into this country and then expect us to cater to them, people that get outraged at the prospect of us actually enforcing our immigration laws.
Danielle, playing the race card just doesn't cut it anymore. Most Americans don't care what color you are, but they do care if you come legally. Our current treatment of the issue is racist if you think about it. If a Dominican floats on a raft here, or a Chinese person hides in a cargo container on a ship, we send them back. If someone crosses the Mexican border, we can't send them back, because it hurts families. I see a discrepancy here...
