As many German POWs recalled, they were very fearful for their lives upon arriving in the US. Being a POW, they expected the worst. Horrible living conditions and torture . To their amazement, they arrived in a country virtually untouched by the war! One German soldier recalled , being fearful of the Americans and expected to be mistreated. To his amazement, he was offered coffee and breakfast on boarding the train to the POW camp. What they were met with, was unbelievable to their own eyes. Clean living and working conditions . They recalled being treated humanely by the Americans. Good food, friendly people and all the luxuries they could ask for. Alcohol for social gatherings and sports for their amazement. This was all Roosevelt's plan of humane treatment of mankind! Many Germans liked it here! Some Germans began to learn to read and write English and even learned some American songs. Others stayed faithful to the Third Reich. Shortly before being released, they were shown videos of what was truly taking place ! Many Germans were horrified by the sight of mass graves and all the suffering and torture. They had no knowledge of what was truly happening! Needless to say, they returned to Germany, while others chose to return to the US and become citizens!
They made do with what they had and don't we all.
