Do People Understand That America is Not A Country of Immigrants?
a citizen is born and raised in a specific country. Americans are citizens. Not immigrants. This arguments is senseless and it still puzzles me as to why pro-illegals and illegals still use it for justification of illegals entering the US. (disregarding the fact that they are committing a crime). It doesnt matter who was here first hundreds of years ago, what matter is the LAW!
so when people whine and say "the US is a country of Immigrants and illegals have rights" please educate them with the truth. Anyone can come to the US, but LEGALLY!!!!!!!

Wow. Look at some of these answers. Come on people! America WAS a nation of immigrants... like 230 years ago. Here in the year 2007, 85% of residents are native born.
Obviously, we are descendants of immigrants (as is everyone in the world), but that is not the same thing as being an immigrant.
Then why has our population grown by 27% since 1984? Yes we are "still" in fact a nation of immigration, but legal immigration.

First of all, you are DEAD wrong that 90% of Americans have been here for centuries. The only people who have been here for CENTURIES would be the Native American population, but since you want to take issue with that term let's call them INDIGENOUS.... Secondly, there is no such thing as ILLEGAL...there are UNDOCUMENTED migrants. Being in America without proper documentation is NOT A CRIME, it is a civil matter, handled through administrative procedures, NOT criminal courts (which, incidentally is why these folks are not entitled to an attorney during deportation hearings). So, HERE is the TRUTH....ANYONE can come to America; period. The HOPE is that they will do so with the proper documentation.

The Illegal presence in the U.S. is a civil, not a criminal, offense. If apprehended, undocumented immigrants can demand a hearing to appeal deportation. Last year, Congress ATTEMPTED to make the mere presence of an undocumented alien/migrant ILLEGAL (See Sec. 203 of HR 4437 and subsection 206 of S 2454)....NEITHER PASSED. Under HR 4437, both entry and PRESENCE would be turned into felonies, barring future entry into the US. So, you are, STILL incorrect.
Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, lots of people work for HS; and clearly do not know the law. I stand by what I stated. Citing USC does not address the issue at hand. If it were illegal THEN WHY would Congress trouble themselves to amend the law. Perhaps you do not understand the difference between ADMINISTRATIVE LAW and CRIMINAL LAW....that is okay...you are one among many.....but you are incorrect and I can only hope that others reading this don't simply take YOUR opinion as fact but seek further information on the issue. The concept of American democracy was built on the backs of those people who for whatever reason departed a foreign homeland and sought a new life across the sea. So technically you are a nation of Immigrants. Yes most are Several generations deep but they are still of an ethnicity that is not Native to the American shores. This distinction is becoming more blurred as time and travel opportunities advance. So your debate surrounding the LEGAL right to abode in America is a valid point. However the argument about Immigrants is hogwash.

You've made some good points. Here's one that I came up with: When someone tells you that American people immigrated from Europe, tell them there were no immigration laws, therefore making it legal for them to be here.

LEGAL immigrants---no matter where they are coming from---are welcome here and our eligible for the same rights/benefits as any other legal US citizens.
ILLEGAL invaders are criminals, are not welcome here, and are not eligible to any benefits/rights--as they are NOT citizens!!! They have the right to be treated fairly and humanely until they are deported, nothing else!! They in no way whatsoever should be rewarded for their lawlessnes by being given an expedited path to citizenship---while those who are attempting to become citizens through the proper/legal process are sent to the back of the line!!

Why do you care about that, what matter is that a human lives right, all your being is selfish. Yes, this country is a country of immigrants, in the same concept your thinking is the same why many do. the people that live here come here from other countries and they immigrated and the thing your missing is for example for Mexicans its not easy to get a VISA or anything to america why? because were next to the US and coming LEGALLY is not easy also because the PESO is very low then a dollar. Except for Native American Indians, everyone in this country came to America or is here due to the good fortune that a parent, grandparent, or other relation came before them.
