At what point does a defining moment in history become irrelevant?

My question, to elaborate on the one last night is HOW do we determine when a major historical event becomes irrelevant? Furthermore, WHO determines it is no longer relevant?
Consider slavery. Should we say that since it happened "so long ago" that it's not important anymore?
How about the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor? We all learned about that in history. When will we forget it? When will it become irrelevant?
How about 9-11? It's past. Shouldn't we all FORGIVE & FORGET and move on with our lives? What is the significance in remembering that day? WHEN WILL IT BECOME IRRELEVANT?

A "defining moment" by definition never becomes irrelevant, or else it wouldn't be "defining". Mosts of the events in history are repetitions of similar previous events, a knowledge of history with a properly applied perspective is akin to "forewarned is forearmed."
A smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.
We must always live by the old addage that we must learn from our past or else be doomed to repeat it.
As for how long an event should resonate through time would have to be based on it's magnitude obviously.
There have been relatively minor events and there have been major events. Some have more effect than others.
Some seem to repeat themselves much like Pearl Harbor and 9-11. Or Vietnam and the War on Terror. The Third Reich and Islam. Within each of these we find striking similarities that cannot be denied.
Maybe it's Gods way of giving us another chance to learn.

Nothing is irrellevant,and when human lifes are lost it will never be forgotten,people who have lost family members will never forgive or forget.And maybe this is the meaning of life?
Of course it's relevant! Why would it be OK for all the White people to come here & round up the Native Americans & herd them off like cattle down the Trail of Tears to reservations where they still live today & not expect any repercussions from that?! They are human beings & we treated them as animals. Yes, they fought us just as we are now trying to fight against the Hispanics that we see as taking over "our" country. Of course they fought us because we were threatening their way of life. We refused to "adapt" to their ways. Hmmmm...funny, isn't that what all the whites are complaining about these days? We don't speak Cherokee do we? Or Lakota? No. We made the natives of this land adapt to us as we killed them & took over & ravaged their land! Is THAT relevant? I think it most certainly is in God's eyes! We haven't been here that long, folks. We don't "own" this land. All land belongs to God. Those who are here are only here by the grace & mercy of God Almighty. That includes the white illegal alien who came over on a boat a couple hundred years ago or the brown illegal alien who risks his very life walking hundreds of miles in the pursuit of a better life for himself & his family today. His dream is no different than that of our own ancestors. He's just doing it in a less violent way. Bottom line is what goes around comes around, you reap what you so....all those famous cliches. There's a REASON they are so famous. They are true. Whites need to stop being so self-righteous and accept that change is not coming....it's here.

The issue isn't relevance. Wise people know that we can either learn from history, or be doomed to repeat it.
The issue is the politicizing of certain events. And the polarizing of the US people based on the politicizing of certain events. And we have all seen the wacko conspiracy theories denying the holocaust, denying radical Islamic terrorism, and even blaming the government for 9-11.
I'm not sure what you're driving at, but if you are tired of PC, count me in.
I'm so sick of this crap,,, be honest it becomes irrelevant when the "white man" says it does.... white people (as a whole) always try to blame other people, therefore anytime some sort of blame is tossed their way they say it is irrelevant, they make it unimportant,,,anytime something doesn't fit into their standards it is irrelevant...and i do not care if this country is made up of 66% white people that doesn't mean that this is you're country... who gives you the right to decide who can enter this country... as far as i am concerned this country belongs to every person, every color, every race,...has anyone noticed there is not one passage in the bible that refers to that united states as a particular nationality,,(I'll have to check but I'm sure it doesn't refer to the united states at all) hmm.. could that be because god actually intended for this country to have a mix of all nationalities? as soon as the pendejos find someone else to pick on the Mexicans will again become another irrelevant situation... and again people those mexicans who you are so against coming here, working, and then going home, why are you against that? because they are borrowing this country for their gain? isn't that what we did, conquered this land (stole it) and then took over and had our familes here, imposed on the natives,,, made laws. were we right in that? NO!!! but you will say yes simply because it made it possible for you to live here... and these mexicans that we are so against for working here and then leaving, did you know that a majority of them have social security taken out of every check they make, and since they do return to mexico, they never get a dime of that back,,oh but i'll bet your grandma is collecting the social security that jose paid in isn't she...
