And Map--would you be happy to foot the bill if that estimate is wrong by half? What if it's $20K? Or what if it's closer to $80K when you consider what a huge portion of our citizens pay little-to-no taxes.
Politicians who are attempting to make this deal are completely self-serving and believe that the American populice is in general dumber than a bag of rocks. Both parties want this to pass because they think it's a way for them to secure the hispanic vote when these people become legal. If either side says no, the other side wins. It's much the same as television campaign advertising. Nobody likes it, but if someone fails to do it, the other side gains an advantage. We need to have standards in this country of who can immigrate. The rest of the world has them because they don't want immigrants to drain the public services. We in this country are too politically correct for that. We cannot continue to take non-skilled workers in to the bossom of this country indefinately. The cost of cheap labor is much more than just the cost to the employer. The Heritage foundation has done an excellent job of illustrating that.
And to the poster after me... leave your deragatory language in the gutter. The use of slurs only gives the opposition ammunition to say that if you are against this reform you are a racist.

Everyone on the right is throwing that figure around but no one seems willing to look at it closely or even try to understand what it means. They're just assuming that it's correct instead of being a highly subjective estimate.
RESPONSE - I'm not saying that it won't cost anything. I am saying that I have enough questions about this one estimate to want to see estimates from other sources. A lot of people are throwing around the $2.5 trillion figure without questioning it.

I can't afford my real estate taxes that just went up another $1,000 despite having done nothing to my home to warrant that increase and despite the prices of homes dropping due to a flat housing market. I sure can't afford $8,333 or $40,000 or $117,333 or even $1,000. I can't afford to pay for my own healthcare that the illegal immigrants get for free.

What are the costs of the alternative? That is, what are the costs of such things as:
a) identifying, apprehending, and then deporting the over ten million illegal immigrants currently in the country?
b) filling the jobs that they leave behind? and
c) making sure that they don't simply try to re-enter the country?
There would be additional costs, as well. Certainly, our relations with foreign countries such as Mexico and China (which would be forced to accept large population inflows) would be negatively affected. Also, because many immigrants send back large sums of money to relatives living outside the United States, the economies of those countries would be adversely affected -- which would likely increase the number of immigrants to this country.
