A foreigner tells you"I want to become an American citizen"what do you expect from him once he lives in the US

I really want to know what do American people expect from foreigners living in the country and willing to be assimilated.

Answer:
It's simple:
Be employed, pay taxes, no free lunch
Learn sufficient English to be understood
Know a little about our government
Speak and act respectful
Finally, when a citizen, behave like one.

Americans understand others wanting to be citizens. They just need to see enough desire to do the above.
Don't expect anything from him just like every other law abiding American citizen.
To assimilate, make more than a modest effort to learn our language. Learn about the community they live in, work hard for a better life for themselves and family, and to make friends with those around them. Be American.
Learn about the country, be active in the society, vote, etc.

In other words - do everything Americans don't do.

Well, that's how it worked out, when I became a citizen :-)
American's make their own choices everyday: where to live, where to work, what to buy. Wouldn't it be the same if a foreigner becomes an American citizen? They are an American after all if they earn it legally.

If a new citizen decides not to learn the language they are only limiting themselves. It's up to them to make a life for themselves as so many other folks have to...good or bad.
To get a job and work like everyone else.
Keep the place clean - no littering, no spitting, no loud noises, no cell phones, no talking on the elevator.
I expect him to do what most US americans do. Work and give 1/3 of your money to tio SAM.
A few things that are not too much to ask for in my opinion, such as learning how to speak english, making an honest living, and truly believing that this is a great country...because it is...
Don't spew mindless hatred about our country and its citizens. Don't set up mini-countries in neighborhoods where Americans are not welcome and not safe in.
Otherwise, just get to know us. I think you'll clearly find it's different than the trendy propaganda you heard in your country of origin.
That they obey the laws
That they make an effort to have a basic proficiency in english at least.
That they try to be a benefit to the system not a detriment.
A bit of appreciation and graciousness doesnt hurt either.

Other than that I hope they are successful and happy.
I expect immigrants to be self-sufficient.

I'd prefer if immigrants learned English and made a sincere attempt to assimilate because I believe that benefits everyone. After all, it's hard to be self-sufficient if you can't interact with the vast majority of people living in the United States. I have no desire to force anyone to learn English, but I think learning how to speak English is in their best interest.
To learn English and become a lrgal citizen , with all the rights .
Speak English and abide by the law.
First to apologize and pay compensation to native Americans,
The very first and only thing I want to know is this; Did you legally enter the United States and are you legally here now?
I think it is none of our business and we have no right to "expect" anything from anyone.

What business is of yours or mine what a new immigrant does or desires or strives for. We cannot dictate how another choses to live as long as it is law-abiding activities.

What a ridiculous idea that we should hold a new immigrant to some high standard that we ourselves rarely adhere to.

When they become citizens, they have to pass the citizenship test. Find it on the web and try to answer the questions.

Bet you can't get more that 20% without looking up the answers.

They also must have a grasp of the Engish language and be able to speak, right and understand it.

When someone new comes into our country, greet them, offer help if they need it and then butt out. You have enough trouble managing your own life...leave them to theirs.
love this country. and always keep your culture with you because that is what makes America.
