No... It wouldn't lessen the problem. As long as we continue to give freebies to illegals, the problem will continue no matter what America chooses as the official language.

I don't think having an official language would affect the illegal immigrant population...whether or not that population is a problem. It WOULD affect legitimate immigrants. Don't forget, immigrants can be from anywhere.
Yes, I think if English was made the official language of the U.S., illegal immigrants would think twice before sneaking into this country. If they really wanted to be here they would do what it takes to become a citizen legally.

NO. But if we focused more on people who come here to assimilate and learn english it will make it easier for them. The only reason the idea that English should be the official language is that the government should'nt have to print all their instructions and tax forms and ballots into 8 million diffierent languages. Why should we bend over backwards to accomodate anybody who doesn't want to learn the language? If you come here you must think it is better than from where you came. If you don't like it, go back to where you came from. We really don't care.
no, we focus on it cause its a tangible solution, what they dont realize is that the official language changes nothing, people still require translation and by law we have to provide them (some citizens dont have the english comprehension required for detailed or complex forms)
I don't much care about this national language BS. Ultimately, I think it'd be more of a symbolic gesture that wouldn't actually solve anything.
The open market makes more of an actual impact. Economic success requires some mastery of the English language. Maybe immigrants 'right off the boat' don't understand this and don't care, but their children will.
Frankly, I don't really mind if a person doesn't want to learn English. Yeah, it's inconvenient and irritating, but I figure that they lose out more than I do. It's in every immigrant's self-interest to walk the walk and talk the talk of the natives.

Maybe, but what bothers me right now is that most of the people wanting English to be our official language can neither speak it nor spell it? I am an American, loving the English language and I took the time to learn it, please people, do yourselves a favor and take a refresher course on the English language. I'm not trying to be nasty but have you read some of these comments? I have to cry foul!

Language and the illegal immigration have nothing to do with one another. Majority of the countries in the world are multilingual and people have no problem with it. The way the global economy and development is going, it is getting more and more vital to be not just multilingual, but also know and appreciate different cultures.
and by the way... US economy can hardly survive without illegal immigrant workers who agree to do very hard and dirty work for very little pay. If they are gone, who is going to do it, YOU?
